My media consultant, Jackie Sinclair, was sad today. She was sad because her local suburban newspaper was discontinued. She enjoyed reading through stories about her town and neighborhood. Right away I realized that Part 15 radio should fill the gap of disappearing local news papers.
At least two Part 15 stations I know of already do a steady job of reporting local events on their websites and on the air: end80Radio in Tybee, Georgia, and Tiny Radio at Friday Harbor, Washington. Another one who worked hard at local coverage was The Crow. You may know of some others.
The search for neighborhood news starts at the fence and front porches where sipping gossips serve as eye and ear witnesses, and city hall where road closings and police logs can be found.
Local merchants also have stories to tell as do construction sites, schools and libraries.
People who can't quite get your signal at their homes can park in front of your house for news updates.
Part 15's time has come.
luckily in my area the newspaper is still pretty popular where im at and i receive it every day execpt for saturdays and i read the local page and state page articles and regional news from my local channel 12 and read the news on KDSX Radio monday through friday at 5:25 PM.
