I'm just throwing this out.

Has anybody used litz wire for a Part 15
AM transmitting antenna?

My AM transmission has been off the air
for quite a while. I have not had the time
to redo the ground system and copper pipe antenna,
which had been the plan here.

I'd like to just get something running on AM
that might cover some of the neighborhood.

I was wondering if some kind of litz wire would
maybe work as well as my copper pipe antenna
did?

I have no idea if this is worth a try.

Does anybody out there know?

Best Wishes

If you already have the litz wire there is no harm in trying but I don't believe there will be an advantage over regular hookup wire.

My reasoning is that litz wire is built with many fine wires in parallel with the idea being that the current distribution in each wire will fill the entire conductor as opposed to what happens with a larger diameter wire where the current crowds toward the outside surface of the wire due to the skin effect. The idea is that the entire cross section of copper is used for the current in the litz wire but the advantage to this is when there is a need to have the smallest possible diameter wire for coils due to physical size constraints. The litz wire gives lower RF resistance than a comparable diameter of solid wire.

If you use for example a #18 or larger wire then the RF resistance even with the skin effect will be smaller than that of fine litz wire due to the larger diameter available which gives a larger cross sectional area for the current than would the litz wire.

Just my prediction.

Neil
