Anyone know anything about these guys?

Just wondering if they would really help keep our school's station current on all the fees and any possible FCC changes that we may be able to take advantage of.

Just wondering if they would really help keep our school's station current on all the fees and any possible FCC changes that we may be able to take advantage of. The annual fee is pretty reasonable if they are fairly quick to respond to our questions and concerns. I know this has a little more specific areas than the whole part 15 community, but maybe someone has some input.

Being that today is Sunday, I never expected to receive a reply today. But I did get a reply, and found that our school was once a member, so I guess they really are real, and of some kind of benefit. I also looked at the RIAA fees, and what I can get through IBS or CBI is cheaper than paying as a personal station. If you can affiliate yourself with a school, then you can save some money and reporting headaches. Otherwise you must account for each song played so that the money can be distributed properly. I haven't looked into BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC yet since I think we already pay the educational "blanket" payments for those which also doesn't require reporting and also saves some money.

I worked for a Christian station that was dayparted with a Public School System and he was telling me this. It took his fees down a lot. He also was able to go great prices on other things. Did you get a discount on your BSI stuff.

Nope, no discount from BSI. There was a discount offered from Keith on the Rangemaster, and a discount offered on the SStran AMT3000 from Phil. RCS Selector was very cheap, as long as the software is actually taught in a class. I haven't found any real discounts for our web stream yet, but we should have that worked out through our regular 'net connection in a couple of weeks. We still need to get our RIAA up to date though.

If you are a public radio broadcaster, your RIAA fees are even less than eductional rates. IBS says they are trying to get that reduced.

The last station I worrked at had BSI when I started there. I changed to IMEDIA TOUCH which I consider one of the top programs. They gave us a great discount because we were a non-profit educations. WE got the full system plus all the hardware for $18,000 a commercial station would have paid 10,000 more. I only have BSI at home because I was given the program when we replaced the other. BSI is a real pain to v-track and they jam everything on the same screen. I have been very impressed with MEDIA TOUCH and change over from BSI was great and they kill BSI on customer support. We did not use seclector was not paying a monthly fee. We used Natural Music and it worked fimnr with BSI and IMEDIA TOUCH. We had so many problems with BSI locking up for no reason at all and they always blamed it on our hardware and would not support. I went A whole weekend playing CDs because their Customer Support would not get back to me. For my part Am station I would rather just get rid of Simain and go with IMEDIA TOUCH or even somthing simple like Raduga. I am very excited about this part 15 AM. I would like to have a LPFM and I really have gotten burned out on that process, I was involved in one and found out how ineffective the FCC is. Send me an email address and I will tell you how I blew $50,000 on a LPFM. I think before I start the AM I may get another program and transfer my Siman to somebody who wants it.

Well I think (hope) I found the magic combination to make Simian work on the new machine. SOmething is still wrong with the sound cards though, no matter how I assign the windows sounds, it always comes out of the wrong card. Thankfully this is the machine in Production so I'm just going to wait for IT to provide our new computers. The one thing with our system is that I have everything connected on a network with a central music library. BSI hates this and as soon as you say network, that's all they key in on. I recently had one of their techs tell me that it is impossible to play 3 stereo wave files across a 100mbps network connection. That's when I blew up at them. It's clear that their people do not even know how their own software works, let alone how a network works.

Our air machine is extremely stable, so I can't complain too much about it. The VT is a little "funny" though. ANd this is built on the same computer hardware that our production machine uses. It is also the CHEAPEST computer that mankind can build, with cheapo MSI mainboard, and the cheapest network card known to mankind, and an AMD processor. All things that BSI hates.

If you can find an old ASI 4346 sound card, I would recommend giving it a try with Simian. Once you find the magic combination of steps to get everything installed, it might surprise you. Use the 2.97 version drivers, I don't like the 3.x version much at all, but the older version doesn't work with the ASI 6044 and 6012 cards in our production machine. Use a cheapo Turtle Beach Santa Cruze sound card for the VT and cue channels. Put them into a Kluge Box (simple mux box) to get it all down to a single channel.

If there wasn't a bunch of paperwork attached to all our purchases, I would consider trading something for your copy of Simian. But I don't think the bean counters would like me dealing with their money.

And I would very much like to here the details of that LPFM station, and I bet a few people here would like to read it too. But if you don't want to post it openly, you can email me at the following: endlerg AT sunyocc DOT edu just take out the spaces and replace with the correct symbols.

Once I get the RIAA payments out of the way, I'm going to start working on my boss to buy the part 15 AM stuff and get that going. I really want to get started on it while there's still a little energy around the subject. Unfortunately it's going to cost about the same for the RIAA and IBS fees as the price of the transmitter and antenna and audio/power cable.

The sound card I have for it is one of the best they recommend it cost $2,500 at the time and I have two of them. Just not a hugh fan. Yeah if I could find someone who wanted it I would get rid of it. I would like to tell everyone about it but it was a big mess and the hills still ahve eyes. Let me tell you I never thought in my life I would be in Ohio Appeliate Court or charged with contempt iof court. I will email you the paticulars but there were just alot of people on these boards at the time that well let's say not a versed on the rules as they thought they were. If you need any extra sound cards down the road let me know.

He and I talked about pricing on the project and I could see me needing five at one point. I think I will put a budget together and see what kind of money I can drum up.

Sounds like it might be the 4346 card, or maybe one model up. Both are good cards as long as you don't try to use a mix of MP3 and wave (or any compressed and wave). The new cards are supposed to handle the mixed formats, but we won't be trying anytime soon. Everything is now wave and that's the way it will stay. With 750GB of server space we won't run out too soon.

Funny thing happened this morning... the Simian in our production room completely lost it's mind over night. I can only shake my head at tis point. Wish I could send it all of this stuff from BSI back!

I am sorry to say it does not surprise me. What is it doing? I can tell you thats why I really just want to get rid of mine, I may not even use it. Is it their hardware or your own?

It's our hardware. Funny thing is that our older system works great. I finally got them to send the code so that I can make our key work with the previous Simian 1.6 which is what I run on the air computer. I hope this will finally do the trick. But it won't surprise me if I walk into work and it has gone completely stupid again.

...was in the olden days...I wrote an article on assembling a news room with no budget. In those days there were still the "magic numbers" of News/Public Affairs/Other programming required, and I built a sourcelist from almost scratch...

Interestingly enough, Gary Crawford was on some of those old USDA tapes back in 1978. He's still thee today and still funny.
