Hi Guys:
Sorry to bother you all with this.
Some of you had posted info on how
to turn on magnification and voicing
text for windows. I cannot find
what you said even though I know it
is there.
I am having trouble finding things in
my house, having more trouble reading,
etc.
I am working with doctors because my
case is very complicated.
I expect things will get betters, but
right now, all projects are on hold.
So that's the new outside 1690 transmitter/ant,
the continued 13.560 project, the Gates board
restoration and the solar powered project.
So if you guys could give me the visual aids info
for Windows again I would really really appreciate it.
Thank you so so much.
Best Wishes,
Bruce, MICRO1690/1700
Hi Bruce ... sorry to hear about vision problems.
Perhaps others have already helped.
For magnification, Go Start and type Magnifier. You should get a square magnifier that follows the mouse around the screen.
For Text-to-Speech (TTS) and Speech Recognition, Go Start->Control Panel->Ease of Access->Ease of Access Center, then turn on Text To Speech.
From there the system will help you set up TTS preferences and also Speech Recognition. SR requires a mic, but since you're a part 15 radio operator, you may already have one hooked up to your computer in some way. Anyway, you have to have a mic plugged in to talk to your computer. The system should more or less talk you through the process.
When done, if you use SR you will need to train the system to listen to your particular voice. It will get better the more you use it. You will be able to do a lot with your computer without needing to use the mouse to open and close apps, read emails and dictate replies, etc.
I wish we could embed audio files here as easily as we can with emails ... feature request time 😉
Bruce, I just spent the last hour or so searching around for what I think you need. While Ken is correct with the information he gave you, I don't think you would not be satisfied using that method.. it's complicated, and the end results is less than desirable.
I think what you want is Natural Reader..
I downloaded the free version and experimented with it and came to the conclusion it is what you need..
BUT..
I don't think you would be happy with the free version, the robot voices just sounds terrible!
If you can afford it, the $50 Personal Version really sounds excellent..
For example, Ken's post above would be read to you and
it would sound like this... www.end80radio.com/ken-sample.mp3
Another sample from me here: www.end80radio.com/rich-sample.mp3
I've looked around and it is the most inexpensive quality sounding all purpose reader I could find with high quality voices.
Like I said, there is a free version that works exactly the same, but only has robot voices, go ahead and download it and see if you would be happy with it: http://www.naturalreaders.com/index.htm
if not, then consider the $50 Personal Version.
Bruce, Something I didn't think to mentioned to you..
I don't know what your computer screen resolution is currently at.. but if your right-click on your desktop, and select "Properties", a display settings box will pop up.
Along the top of that box will be 4 or 5 tabs..
Select the "Settings" tab, then slide the "Screen Resolution" slider all the way to the left (towards less).
Then click OK.
This will make everything on your computer screen bigger and make everything easier to read..
HELLO BRUCE FROM CARL BLARE.
I AM NOT SHOUTING AT YOU, I AM WRITING IN ALL CAPS SO MAYBE IT WILL BE EASIER TO READ.
JUST ONE DAY BEFORE YOU WROTE THE ABOVE MESSAGE TO TELL US HELLO, I STARTED THINKING THAT YOU HADN'T SAID ANYTHING FOR AWHILE, AND NOW WE KNOW WHY.
I AM VERY MUCH BEHIND YOUR DOCTORS BECAUSE I WANT THEM TO SOLVE YOUR SITUATION SO YOU CAN RESUME EVERYTHING.
GOOD LUCK WITH ALL THE HELPFUL DEVICES THE OTHERS HAVE LINKED.
Hey Bruce,
Sorry about your vision troubles.
If you press & hold CTRL and press the + button it will make the webpage larger and easier to read.
Thank you for your kind replies.
They mean more to me than you'll
ever know.
Best Wishes,
Bruce, MICRO1690/1700
"f you press & hold CTRL and press the + button it will make the webpage larger and easier to read."
I guess I thought everybody knew the standard zoom. On my Mac, it's very similar, Cmd/+ or Cmd/-.
The problem is affects the whole window, whereas the Magnifier hilites a section, and you move it around the page.
The most important thing I was trying to get Bruce to do was get into the Ease of Use Center. Once you have TTS turned on, it can be used to walk you through the settings. I think it's the best starting place for now. Learn how to drive before you go buy a sports car.
Without spending unnecessary $$, I know there are choices of voices. Some sound better than others. On my Mac there are a lot. I've been using TTS and SR for many years, and will use them even more in years to come. I have written voice command programs for spec purposes, custom onscreen keyboards for those with impaired motor skills, custom controllers for X-10 devices, magnifiers with pixel grids for aligning screen objects, oversize cursors, all sorts of aids.
If I ever got back into it, I would do it in some language that works on the web.
Thanks again. I have 2 PCs at home
and will try everything you guys have
mentioned.
I am fortunate to have access to a Mac
over at the local university, and I have
also been able to use that with a lot
of success. Actually, I'm using it right
now, with mag, an enlarged cursor, and
color reverse. (As of last week, I had no
idea how to make those Mac functions
work either.)
But the PCs at home are what I use the most,
so again, the info you gave me is greatly
important.
I told my family how great you guys are. And
even though my wife doesn't really understand
what we are doing over here at Part 15.US, she
thought it was great you all have been helping
me out. It has been mentioned on this site
that it is a warm community here. And now
even MY WIFE knows that it's true. And that's
really saying something!

"Local Music continues, then the 2nd and 3rd chapters of SHERLOCK HOLMES "Hound of the Baskervilles"
You can do that on a PC too, I did it with my little Acer Netbook on my boat (I use it mostly for remote control of the studio iMac).
It's good to know that. The reverse color
helps me tremendously.
By the way, I still remember the cool phone
conversation we had. That was fun!
Thanks again,
