I am looking for an easy way to convert stereo files to mono within or outside iTunes. I wish to do this for hundreds of files, so something where it can be batched would be more appropriate.
In the past it was easy to in iTunes you just clicked a box or somesuch. For the life of me I can't fiqure out how to do it or if that feature has been cast aside.
I have dabbled with Audacity in the past, but it's been a while and I've forgotten everything I learned.
I have also researched other programs, but wanted to try you guys and see what you think.
All the advice you guys have given in the past was spot on and it is appreciated.
Thanks,
Chance
Using Audacity File/Import Audio;
Double Click on graphic window;
Tracks/Stereo-to-Mono;
Save your mono file.
Tell us if it answers your question.
Question answered. Audacity works fine. Thanks for the help.

Considering you have hundreds of files to convert, you might want to consider a free program called "MP3 Quality Modifier".
Here it explains the process: http://www.freewaregenius.com/convert-stereo-audio-files-mono-batch-using-free-software/
I'm just wondering why you want to convert these files. While I broadcast both over the air and over the internet with mono, I keep all my files in their original state and just use on the fly conversion. I use VST for the audio processing of my over the air signal and use a mono mixer plug-in. I don't do any audio processing for my internet stream, but rely on Edcast to mix any stereo files I have down to mono in the creation of the stream.
I have never used iTunes Media Player, don't even know what it looks like, so I cannot comment on it.
Other than that, I have used several "on the fly" methods of getting down-converted from stereo to monaural without changing each file individually...
One player that can be set to "force" mono is Winamp.
The now-famous Stereo Tool by Hans Von Zutphen, eaither as a Winamp DSP Plugin or a Stand Alone Version, can convert to mono in real-time as part of its settings for driving AM transmitters.
And just like Artisan is doing, several of the stream encoders will give a mono output no matter what's put into them.
I have a complex setup because two of my three streams go out in stereo and one in mono, as well as driving several AM transmitters in mono. Somehow I got it all to work but if I tried to explain it I'd need to look under the hood for an hour to recall how it all fits together.
I am using the decade transmitter ms-100 mono and the change to mono with all tracks is just converted with the transmitter. Other transmitters like the wholehouse 3 has mono or stereo selection
Am transmitter does the same...takes the stereo in and transmits mono out.

Right, Mark, and that is certainly true of the SSTran Transmitters from sstran.com.
Both the AMT5000 and AMT3000 have built-in stereo to mono mixers.
I don't know wehy I didn't think to mention this, as I have used it successfully before.. A simple free plugin called "Somewhat Mono" automatically converts the stereo output to mono without having to alter the existing stereo file, which make more sense than actually converting every file ahead of time. Not sure what your using for automation, but it does work nicely with the earlier version of ZaraRadio, or any other program that supports DSP plugins.

I spoke of this previosly here: http://www.part15.us/forum/part15-forums/stereo-mono-plugin-works-zararado
