Silly question but how often do you run your station?

Silly question but how often do you run your station?

I find that I can only run my station for around 8 hours at a time. I have to run my computer as an MP3 player and I run my mixers and other equipment. I don't want to run it 24/7 because it will run my lightbill up a lot with all the equipment and it isn't really worth it because of the low RF power (small audience) and the nagging from my Mom :P.

So how do you run your station? Do you run it all the time or only hours out of the day? Also how do you keep listeners when they tune in and hear it and then another day they tune in at the wrong time and hear static?

Do you really think you get listeners a few hours out of the day when you switch on and off your rig or how do you manage to keep people tuned in?

Thanks. Just curious.

Burn some shows to CD without time announcements, weather and etc, and just use a CD player or changer when you aren't going to actually be running a live show.

I don't use it for 24/7, since I don't run 24/7, but it's what I do for "blackout" when I fill in a dj spot on friends' internet stations once in a while, or if I want the computer I usually use to run the automation free to play a game, etc.

Basically, have/use some canned shows.

I run 24/7 using ZaraRadio automation.

The music plays the artists in the same order all the time, however the artist tunes are random. That breaks it up a bit. And I do occasionally change the order or add/subtract artists from the playlist.

I read copy of local weather which makes it a little more personal than NOAA or Pirate weather.

The AmberAlert promo and FSN news gives it a little more commercial sound as do the Ad Council spots. And then I stick in comedy one liners from the 3 Stooges.

I see occasional hits on the webcast which simulcasts the radio program but off air, I'm my own best listener.

And with everything that consumes electric in this house, my average consumption is about 2.7 megawatts per month. Fortunately our city distributes the power which they buy in bulk so our electric bills are much lower than surrounding communities. My average electric bill is still around $150 to $200 a month. I figure the Part 15 operation is a very small part of that.

I use an old P200 exclusively for the station and it runs 24/7,doesnt take much power without the monitor on. I also have a portable mp3 player to run a generic show during power outages.

I may not be on the air, but my station is automated nearly 24 hours daily. I don't have a large audience, just my family and friends. I play music about 99% of the time, but I might add Talkstar Radio back to the program lineup. Also, if I can ever figure out how to configure the Shoutcast program, I will stream online with Listen2myradio.

My station is on the air 24/7, barring power outages. Snoqualmie is pretty much of a "lights out at 10:00 pm" type of community. But, I'm sure there's some late-nighter in range of my signal who'd like to hear my music.

darklife,

WJJD operates as a daytimer from sunrise to sunset.

You can't get a regular audience going on and off - not in this day and time.

Musicbox will be a 24/7 station.
