I notice many forum users have little thumbnail avatar pictures, some even with simple animation, but I don't see how to install one. How does one do that?

Go here:
My Account -> Edit
and scroll down to the "Picture" section. you can upload your avatar pic there, or now you can use the gravatar service to display an avatar. http://en.gravatar.com/

Many thanks, but what about size?
I'm sure it must fit within certain pixel dimensions.

100x100 and max size of 30k
