Mighty1650 and others are entitled to their opinions (and that is all they are). But that doesn't change the laws, and I'd hate for anyone new to the hobby (or the business) to think that the liklihood of being caught changes anything.
This is, after all, a site dedicated to legal, unlicensed broadcasting.
As a followup to Morningdj's story, SOCAN used to ask me for 4 days of station logs per year. You're supposed to include all that information, such as the name of the song, songwriters, publisher, etc. All I really had available without a great deal of work was my Zara Log, which gave me song title and performer. So I just gathered those up as is for the requested 4 days and sent them in, missing all that other information. I never heard anything back, so my guess is that they really didn't look at them.
SOCAN hasn't even asked for any logs from me since 2008.
ReSound, however, is another matter. They ask everyone for 14 days of logs, and according to their website, are shooting for 365/24/7. I don't know how they're going to go through everything, but that's another reason for a BETS-1 station to stay away from playing anything newer than 50 years old here in Canada.
This horse is DEAD!
That may be so, but there is such a thing as going TOO FAR!! Stuff like this draws attention to an otherwise non caring organization when it comes to part 15 Radio. I agree that sometimes it is best left alone when it has been shown that there is little concern about part 15 Radio because even on AM it goes a mile (two at best). Now when Station 8 finishes his antenna I am wondering what will become of it then. Still AM is not listened to by many of the folks I know. I don't think we'll ever be a threat unless we try and make a business out of our part 15 stations. This is why if some of you are doing this you may want to rethink your steps in order not to rack up a huge expense for yourself. Hobby or Business Radio make the choice.
My station runs itself.....at night when I'm sleeping, daytime when I'm not home. Impossible for me to know exactly what plays all the time!....there is no "log".
Very easy to restrict my playlist to 1966 or before(starting Jan 1st) and no licence fees. The only reason I have the 70s is to have a potential larger audience. Sounding like Artisan is great with me, only I'd include big hits also.
Socan as I posted says 1.9% of your operating costs but I have NO operating cost! and after contacting them with a phone conversation....they had no idea about BETS-1 and never got back to me.
As for Re-sound, I will satisfy Artisan(well, more my own curiosity) and call them next week and see what they say....and I think I will get the same thing as I got from Socan....A 365 days a year log they want?!!! Ya, right!
If I actually call them....I will post the answer I got. Hope I don't have to try to explain BETS-1 to them!!

The requirement to pay BMI has NOTHING to do with if you are operating as a business or not. In fat, if you generate over $10,000 a year, the rate goes up.
Music licensing does not in any way, in any use, depend on if you're making money or not. That is not a fact open to debate, as it is just that. A fact.
Yes, we all, I'm sure, believe that if you're not using music to generate revenue it's use should be free, but that is NOT the case in the USA.
