I'm looking to purchase an AM transmitter to be used in my home for broadcasting old time radio programs to my antique AM tube radio. It appears that the AMT3000 transmitter from SSTRAN is a good transmitter...are there any differences, reviews, or opinions on the BC-100 transmitter available from www.ontheair3.com?

I appreciate any help you can give...

thanks

Since I am not familiar with the BC-100 transmitter I can only be guided by what I read on the website you cited. One big problem is that this appears to not be a systhesised transmitter which means you will need to order a crystal for each frequency you intend to use. That's how I read the specs. but you should read them for yourself in case I missed something.

I have a SSTRAN AMT-3000 and it is a fine unit which I believe will do what you want. It is synthesised, which means you can select your operating frequency by setting some internal switches and change it at will thereafter. A very attractive feature is that it has a built in audio processor which, once set, automatically controls the modulation. Set and forget. Customer support has been excellent in my experience with SSTRAN. You may not be aware that this unit is available as a kit directly from the manufacturer (click the link on the left side of this page) and if you would be comfortable with building a kit and soldering you might consider this to save money.

Here's a link to a thread on this site where the SSTRAN was reviewed:

I second that..the SSTRAN is a excellent AM transmitter. The sound quality is outstanding, unlike the Ramsey AM-25. The SSTRAN has a built in compressor limiter and its adjustable and it makes it sound robust and strong.

Ramsey AM-25 seems to have FM artifacts on the sound and the Ramsey wall transformer is useless, thus you would have to buy a regulated power supply to make it work properly.

The SSTRAN's wallwart works perfectly with no hum and no outboard regulated power supply is needed. Hint ...spend the extra $3 and have them install that tiny IC ..it will save you extra trouble.

SSTRAN is my choice for a AM transmitter.

I am currently in love with my Talking House Transmitter, follow this link to our review section and see additional comments here

The built in antanna auto tuner is quite incredible, especially for casual use.

In fairness to SSTRAN and Rangemaster, however, you will not be able to buy a Talking House from the manufacturer, or get technical support like you can with the other transmitters. Talking House uses some totally delusional distribution process where they sell the transmitters in lots of five, or they want an insane price for one-each.

As noted in the links above, the only hope there is to get on off of ebay or a similar source, usually for around $100.00. Unfortunately, when you buy that way the manufacturer will NOT give you any tech support, which sucks.

Experimental broadcasting for a better tomorrow!

SSTRAN was a waste of money. The only tech help was via email. not a plesant experience. get something else!

Simcha,

My experience is apparently different from yours. The SSTRAN works great for my application. I contacted SSTRAN twice via email with questions and received a prompt and detailed reply both times.

Building it? Tuning it? Please could you tell us what disappointed you about this transmitter - we would be interested to know. For $90, this transmitter is a real gem - a heck of a good design with many satisfied customers.

The SSTrans is a great product for the price. It does take some technical knowledge and some patience to build and set up properly, but when it is,it is a great piece of equipment. Phil does a great job supporting it as well. Please share with us what problems you have with yours. You just may be missing that one detail that will make the difference and change your mind.

I just finished my amt3000 Sunday - it worked the first time. I had a big light with a lens to put it togther with - did you check all parts? I double checked every resistor and part. What was the problem? As for email, most pople I know use email now, it's better than a phone call, but they should have a phone#. Let us know what was wrong, there are a lot of smart people here - good luck, sid
