You have the only SStran that joined the Marines.

There are so many things in each photo I couldn't see any dust.

You need to trade the monster in for a crow statue.

Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of crow statues, JimBob, you have three hours to add this to your station http://cgi.ebay.com/Primitive-Colonial-Lge-Black-Crow-Weathervane-w-Stand-/110641442110

At least thats what I would do if I were The Crow

Cool setup Crow.. I like. Earlier I couldn't get the pictures to come up for some reason, but they showed fine this time. When I saw your UPS, I winced.. I knew I was forgetting something! - I need to get one, got to be prepared,

Concerning my last post; I hope you get a chance to at least look at that old crow weather vane on ebay before it ends.. It was at only $18 last I looked.. It's pretty cool, I'd almost buy it myself, but then I'd have to change the name of my station

Everybody is holding back so the crow weathervane can go to its rightful home, The Crow, Mighty 1650. But by our politeness we are putting sales pressure on The Crow to buy the weathervane, even if he'd rather not.

Is that what I did? hmmm, maybe so, but it wasn't intentional. I just thought it would be appropriate for the man and his station. It was meant to be more like: "Hey! this would be a perfect mascot for the Mighty1650! You ought to get it!" . Time was running out and I felt some excitement, so I emphasized it.
I certainly didn't intend to inflict any degree of pressure.

Carl, you got me feeling kind of guilty.

Appreciate the link Crow, but at this stage of the game I'm considering something more along this line for $25 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F99FP2 - It's actually made to keep cordless phones active, Should be enough to keep the transmitter live while the laptop produces the feed. I can always upgrade to a more suitable back up power at a later date.

But it's just a consideration, I'm not even certain that would work.

Dear RichPowers:

It is a great character trait of yours to be blunt that maybe I bumped your feelings with my goofy joking about "sales persuasion." No, I wasn't criticizing, but thought how everybody NOT buying the crow-vane sort of put The Crow on the spot. Unintentionally.

AND, since neither you NOR any of us would profit from the sale, what we really were doing was showing polite respect for The Crow.

My explanation is probably making things worse. Ah, now they'll send the Marines.

To solve the UPS run time problem, first I found a UPS that carries the load with adequate headroom. Then, I put a remote battery (read large battery) in place of the 12vdc 7ahr internal battery.

The remote 12v 85ahr battery runs a very long time at the rated load. We're talkin' hours.

The one thing I know is that UPS means "Uninterrupted Power Supply." If the AC power goes down, the UPS takes over and keeps the computer running until the storage capacity of the UPS batteries is exhausted.

Now I'm groping around, not sure about what I'm saying. I guess that a UPS could also power "something else," maybe a small lamp, at the expense of more drain to the limited power storage.

The UPS is kept charged during the time the AC is turned on. If the AC doesn't come back on to re-charge it once it's dis-charged, that's the end of the story until the AC finally comes back.

Then, with AC restored, the UPS needs X amount of time to fully recharge.

Now let's get tricky, by imagining some solar panels during the daytime, with their own storage batteries.

Can the UPS somehow be combined with the solar power to provide more reserve power for longer period of time?

LED lamps don't use much power ... in this case, maybe even insignificant. How much light do you need? I have a little 3-LED battery-powered lamp under my CR desk for seeing wires.

On my boat, I'm probably going to run everything off DC (inverters, etc.) and just use shore power for charging the main batteries.

When I put up another system, I intend to use both wind and solar power to charge the batteries, otherwise the same as on the boat.

In the studio, though, I still want UPS, probably need 2.

The next most interesting thing for me, right after low power radio, is power generation.

Back in 2005 when power outages started to become scary possibilities, I checked out a huge stack of books from the library which described right down to nuts and bolts how the big power generators work.

What's so tempting to the inventor, is that it's basically simple. All you do is pass magnets through coils, times many coils and many magnets and many spins. Anybody could do it. All you need, is a way of spinning the turbine. Ahh,.....
