Channelx1610 mentioned in another thread that he didn't know how to post bold or italic text which can be nice to emphasize or highlight things and I am sure there are others with the same concern. I am no expert and learned some of this the hard way and post this so others don't need the "hard" part of the way.

To produce italics the code is (em)This is italics(/em) where the ( is replaced by . If I type this with the characters rather than ( and ) I get This is italics.

Another is (strong)This is strong style(/strong) which appears as This is strong style.

It is common for posters to forget the end directive (/strong) part of the code and this causes a mess. It is always best to use the "preview" function before pressing "save".

There is a link at the bottom of the "Input Format" panel on the "Create Content" page labeled "More information about formatting options" which links to other formatting options if you are interested but the em and strong seem to be the most popular.

Go ahead and try this. There is no harm if you don't get it right at first.

Pictures are always a nice addition to a post but this site doesn't handle them well. Here's a workaround that I use.

There are many picture posting sites but one I like is Postimage.org because it requires no personal information and the interface is clean and intuitive. Upload the picture to the Postimage site and click on the button to copy the picture link to the clipboard then paste the link into your text in your post. That's it.

If you want to get fancy with the link use this code:

(a href="http://postimage.org/image/anqsrolst/" )(strong)without(/strong)(/a) with the "(" replaced with and where the "http...." is the pasted link to the photo host.

This is a link I used in another post and it appears as without

You can leave out the strong directives if you want to make it simpler. Always use the Preview function since it is easy to get this wrong.

The problem with this method of posting pictures is that if the picture hosting site becomes unavailable or you change the picture it becomes a dead link. Otherwise it works well.

Others may have more and better suggestions but this works for me.

I wondered about this for some time, if the forum's current format would handle embedded pictures within a post.

Most common issue I ran into moderating forums and embedded pictures was the graphic being too large, taking the frame of the entire thread far right on the screen. That can be very annoying because you have to use the left to right scroll bar to read posts.

This can be done and SCWIS posted instructions but I found it to be awkward and the formatting, as you mentioned, is an issue. It takes more experience than I have to get it right so I found the alternative.
