My guess would be a 722...

When I was using the Aphex units in the early '80's I used an Aural Exciter followed by a Compellor into an Orban Optimod. It kicked the competitions back sides in the day. The Dominator was not developed and sold until the late 80's.

I happened to know the Compellor and Dominator were popular in the 80.s - but only because I acquired a pair via ebay, and before bidding did a lot of searching and reading.. I don't know if it will answer you're questions, but here's a couple references..

a quip from http://www.261.gr/Jim Somich Processing 2.html . It's a processing history. That page started off on Orbans, then about halfway down it goes to Aphex. ...

....Aphex is a company best known for its recording studio equipment. However, they also ventured into the world of broadcast audio processing in the 1980s with Donn Werbach's 2020 analog processors. Werbach's team at Aphex proved, with the 2020, that analog was far from dead. This was a highly complex box that would define and redefine analog broadcast audio processing for some time to come. I believe the future is digital, but the 2020 proves that there is yet much that can be accomplished in the analog domain. The 2020 is a counterpoint to most of today's broadcast processors and that is good.

And --
In a musician's furum at http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/389447-aphex-compellor-320a-opinions.html , these comments were made.....

The Compellor is not color, it's POLISH. Can really pull a mix together. Many US FM radio stations use them as a pre-processor to great effect. Smoothes out bad gain riding by the DJ.

I believe the companion unit to the compeller is the aphex 720 dominator II. In the '80s I would imagine many fm stations used the two in series in the broadcast chain leading up to the optimod / whatever - perhaps still so today. I really like the dominator... a somewhat transparant brick wall peak limiter that can act like a compressor with decent tone shaping through multi-band peak limiting. Back on track with the compeller, I've long wanted one based solely on the quality and operating characteristics of the dominator. I say go for it. Keep in mind its a +4 balanced piece of gear. Thats how it sounds to me, +/- 3db.

Don't know if thats much help, but thought I'd mention it to you anyway

well there was a RW article back in the 80's (can't seem to locate it) on this very processing chain and in the article wogl 98.1 in philly was using one. i have a LPB FMS 2000 i was going to run using leaky coax and would love to have this complete audio chain from the 320 to the digicoder to use with the FMS2k and would love to find the aphex set that was popular for the am side to use with my hamilton.

im on a quest for a killer am and fm audio chain. i would love to run this chain into a be fx50 turned back down to a power level that can be run around my house and yard using leaky coax. i think this would be a killer part 15 fm setup and of course run a comparable am part 15 setup using a rangemaster (free radiate) or a BE AX10 (carrier current)
