"WASHINGTON, DC, February 5, 2025 — Today, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation passed S. 315, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, out of Committee. Good News! That means that Tesla and others have to start putting AM in their cars? I would think that it would apply to Canada also as the automakers will just put AM in whether for Canada or the USA.
But it still has to pass the senate.
Oh wow. It passed? I'm rather surprised, but happy.
I saw a YouTube video a couple of nights ago by a shortwave listener who is based in the UK. Using the World Radio and TV Handbook as reference, he was talking about the large number of AM stations that are still operational in the US, compared to in the UK. The difference is huge, even taking into comparison the relative sizes of both countries. AM radio in Europe seems to be on life support. I know it faces a lot of serious challenges here, with an increasing number of stations going dark, but we still have a lot of active AM stations. Long may they continue to live - and this act can only help!
I had heard of this bill and am surprised it passed. Presumably good for us?
As I recall, emergency broadcasts are done officially over AM radio in the US, or am I mistaken?
I misinterpreted last weeks news. When it said the bill had passed the Senate O thought that meant it was done. AARP reported on it yesterday and clarifies what I got wrong:
"The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act passed the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday and now heads to the full Senate for passage."
