On top of all the equipment and practices involved in radio station facility is a nook for coffee preparation. During all hours of station operation there is coffee brewing and that cup goes with working a shift.
Here at KDX Worldround Radio from the Mid Mississippi River Valley in the United States of North America our coffee area has been located right amid the operator's work station where a jar of instant coffee, honey jar and spoon occupied space right alongside the tower computer just left of the widescreen monitor.
But lately the setup became too much of a clutter when we added another jar, containing de-caffeinated coffee. So we moved the whole ensemble out to the Upper Management Lounge.
Of special interest is the reason why we added de-caff to the ingredient list.
The pleasure of glugging endless cups with honey added throughout each broadcast day led to nights of bathroom trips brought about because of the diuretic effect of caffeine, so we needed another approach.
By experiment we determined that a single cup of real coffee at the start of the day was not enough to trigger bathroom action later on, so we tried making the second cup de-caffed with the honey disguising any difference in taste and found that any later side-effect remains subdued.
Next, it remains to discover how many further cups of de-caff can be tolerated throughout the day, and we're running trials all weekend.
Never work for a station that prohibits coffee during working hours.
