While sitting here today watching over the live show on WCFI-LP (The Italian Connection) I started thinking about all of the radio history right here in this area.
Northeast Ohio generated quite a few big names in radio; Alan Freed, Mad Daddy, Casey Kasem and many more from the Akron/Cleveland area.
WADC was one of the first stations in Akron, Ohio. Here is an informative collection of info and pictures about that station: WADC info
This seems to show how BIG radio was.
At the tender age of 5, I used to listen to WADC on my crystal radio at night.
We see that Allen T. Simmons, Founder of WADC, also headed his own stables.
As I've heard it ALPB Chairman Bob Felmly also keeps a horse in a stable, in addition to the numerous radio stations under his care.
Here at KDX we have our campus of friendly wild animals who receive habitat and water courtesy of KDX.
Radio stations that cooperate with animals of other species seem to be the ones we remember in years to come.

I have received 2 Akron
stations here in Hartford CT
over the years. WHLO 640,
when it was just a daytimer
- - and WAKR 1590. I have
not heard WADC 1350, but it is
possible.

WADC changed owners/calls at least 3 times in my lifetime.
Currently the call is WARF. It was WSLR after WADC, a very popular Country format. Then WTOU followed by WARF and they pretended to be a Pirate station for awhile saying they were Free Radio Ohio.

Now they are a Fox Sports station.
Their daytime pattern is mostly figure 8, north/south.

Yeah, I see that the Akron 1350
antenna pattern does not send
a lot of RF toward my Hartford location.
So Bob - I love crystal sets and have 2
beautiful ones here. Do you remember
anything about that crystal set you had at age 5, and how far were you from
WADC?

I recall listening to Jim Bohannon
He was on WGCL-FM (G-98) and had a call in show, he took request's and had some regulars.
I think I may have called in once even though i wasn't supposed to.
Yeah, i was unruly as a child lol
My 1st crystal radio was a "Tiny Tim" made by Remco.
It was yellow with red trim. There was a 3 section folding antenna. A short rod slid in/out the top for tunning.
It was about the size of a deck of cards.
A crystal type earphone gave a clear sound and an attached ground wire for good reception.
I lived about 2 miles from the WADC towers.
I still have a Tiny Tim.
I could talk about crystal sets for hours...I hope to have some more
comments.
