I was just browsing through some of the FCC quarterly totals from this year: I was reading from the https://vermontbroadcasters.org/this-week-at-the-fcc/ site, but of course is the same FCC quarterly reports as sourced anywhere.

Anyway, I wasn't looking for anything particular, but I thought it odd how the total of AM stations seems to both rise and fall every few months.. (FM too, but it's the AM totals that's curious)  It just seemed strange to me. Here's from the last 4 quarterly FCC reports

July 7, 2025 to July 11, 2025
The FCC released its quarterly Broadcast Station Totals.  The release shows that, compared to the same release from a year ago, there are 53 fewer AM stations and 18 fewer commercial FM stations, but 333 more noncommercial stations.

March 31, 2025 to April 4, 2025
The FCC released its quarterly Broadcast Station Totals.  The release shows that, compared to the same release from a year ago, there are 60 fewer AM stations and 42 fewer commercial FM stations, but 314 more noncommercial FM stations.

January 6, 2025 to January 10, 2025
The FCC released its quarterly Broadcast Station Totals.  The release shows that, compared to the same release from a year ago, there are 61 fewer AM stations and 38 fewer commercial FM stations, but 191 more noncommercial FM stations.

October 7, 2024 to October 11, 2024
The FCC released its quarterly public notice, Broadcast Station Totals, itemizing the number of stations currently operating in each broadcast service.  The release shows that, compared to the same release from a year ago, there are 52 fewer AM stations and 52 fewer commercial FM stations, but 114 more noncommercial FM stations.
