Knowing that many of our radio hobby friends are with us from Canada, we mention that July 4th is a huge summer holiday in the U.S. commemorating this country's Independence from Great Britain. The main stage act every year is massive pyrotechnics displays, also known as fireworks. Replicating 'bombs bursting in air' the noise and racket is terrifying to pets and wildlife, but humans harbor a fondness for explosive fire-showers signifying 'victory in war'. In past years KDX Worldround Radio hung a microphone outside the Internet Building and broadcast the tumult in stereophonic sound. In more recent times we just wait it out near the fire extinguisher and hope the fire department won't be too busy if our roof catches fire from the fallout. The other holiday when people shoot guns into the air and blow things up is New Years Eve.
But When Is July 4th?
It's a serious question here in the U.S. starting already on the weekend of June 29th and 30th when radio announcers starting saying, "Heading into the July 4th Weekend." And program hosts were saying that more people are flying this Holiday Weekend than ever before. And during the week days from Jul 1 to 3rd it seemed that no one was in their office because it was 'the July 4th Weekend'. Then came July 4th itself, one day, a single day, being called 'The July 4th Weekend'. But wait. It wasn't over on July 5th, when it seemed no one was on the job, not with the July 4th Weekend coming up on the 6th and 7th. I would call it a full scale vacation.
It's not as much of a big deal here, ours is July 1st, Just a long weekend and you don't see many Canadian flags. Not the celebrations like in the USA. On Monday night it's an excuse to light fireworks in the back yard. But I don't work, retired, so every day is a holiday for me.
