SWAIN COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Authorities have released a 911 call related to an incident involving a bald eagle dropping a cat through a car's windshield Wednesday morning.
"Okay, you may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield," the 911 caller said. "It absolutely shattered my windshield."
"I do believe you, honestly," the operator responded.
"I had a witness who was like, 'That is the craziest thing I've ever seen," the caller said. ... ..

"I drive that road every single morning, but this time, I did see the bald eagle coming from a distance, and I'm not used to seeing them there, and I was like 'Wow, that's amazing'. I realized it had something with it, - Once I realized it was a cat that it had, it barely had a hold on it, and it dropped it right on my windshield. It all happened so fast, I could see the cat in my passenger seat. I have guts all over me; there's glass everywhere. It sounded like a bomb went off. Of course, at that moment, I just slam on my brakes. Thankfully, the cat was dead long before it ever hit my windshield, I could tell – its insides were outside.
The first insurance person I spoke to said, 'You're going to be the talk of the whole division. We never hear stories like this.' But, of course, insurance is a battle, so I'm trying to get them to help me out. They won't pay for the wrecker or anything, so I'll have to talk to them again. So far, I've had to spend quite a bit of money on this.
I'm definitely going to keep a closer eye on my cat, that's for sure.
It's shocking to me, it's getting as much attention as it is, honestly. I've read comments people have left about the post: 'Oh, it's insurance fraud, there's no way a cat could leave that big of a hole.' I wouldn't believe it either if I wasn't there.
I just thank God that it wasn't a different scenario, even a shift a little bit more in my direction, that could have landed in my face. It could have been a completely different story. I may not even be here at this point. I thank God even though it happened, that it happened the way it did."
"..A nearby driver on US-74 helped guide her off the road, telling Schlarb that he watched the entire incident unfold."...,,
I have heard of stuff like this. The eagle drops it's prey. Depending on the conditions apply the insurance company may not pay for the damage!
@mark I don't know, it wasn't her fault, I presume she had full coverage, a witness saw it happen, photos and film of the car damage in the he articles... Yeah, it appears to me the insurance company probably has to pay out.
@richpowers I could start another thread about the fine print and how insurance companies get out of paying and companies get out of doing what they say they will do.
I had an object one time fly off a truck and hit my car damaging the right fender. Went to the insurance company to report it and of course to get it fixed on the comprehensive part of the policy. The person asked did the object bounce along the ground before it hit your car or was it airborne and hit you car without hitting the ground? I said no it came off the truck and directly hit my fender. What difference does that make?
No coverage!!! What!....The object was airborne and if it didn't touch the ground before it hit the car it's not covered. After getting over my disbelief I let the person know what I thought of that and said OK I know what to say next time it happens. That is the reason for insurance fraud. I had to pay for the repair 100%. I swear I am not making up this story.
I hate all corporations and insurance companies and their billionaires and "conditions apply" with everything to lessen the chance they have to ever pay or honour something. They are there to make profits, not to give a damn about you. That's how the whole healthcare system is run in the USA...if they can get out of paying they will.
So the point, the cat that was airborne hitting the car may not have the insurance company pay for it. Conditions apply! Read the fine print.
@mark Yeah.. I'm kind of taking my assumption back now, the more I think about it the less sure I am the insurance will pay. Your doubt is justified!
To bad about the cat, probably the oddest roadkill I've ever heard.
@richpowers Also under comprehensive it doesn't cover "acts of god" like a flood, earthquake, hurricane....also things like a riot, war, civil unrest, etc etc etc....that cat falling from the sky could be considered an "act of god", not humanly caused. You know those videos of flooding and you see cars floating down river where a road used to be, or cars burnt when a wildfire rolls into town? Surprise when you call the insurance company! Or if you are parked and a protest turns into a riot and cars get overturned/torched or damaged in some way? Not covered! Just remember, the object that hits your car has to hit the ground first or no coverage as in the case I posted about.
Conditions apply!
Future insurance clause will probably exempt payment for falling cats and cat gut stains.
