Thrift stores are a great way to buy great music cheaply.
I was at such a store today, and scored a CD copy of The Benzedrine Monks of Santo Dominica. Needless to say, it's a novelty act of pseudo monks chanting (!?) hits such as Theme From the Monkees, We Will Rock You and Do You Think I'm Sexy. Put out by Rhino, it's a cult classic, and hard to find.
I also purchased some classical and pop music, but that CD made the trip worthwhile. And all for $1 each (less a 40% discount as it was a sale day).
Good idea! Similarly, I have country thrift stores nearby that have a plethora of music books, like, public domain music that is quite old, but printed out! Hymn books too with public domain stuff. I am kicking around a commission, to esteemed family, who are gifted players and have them record on kiddo's music studio. And of course broadcast it after some modest engineering.
I got curious after reading your post Artisian and had to check them out.. About 20 seconds in I began thinking this is awesome! and it continued to be so until it got interrupted by some guy in a parked car apparently talking to the Pope or something, watched another minute and decided I dont presently have the patience for this and shut it off. Maybe later.
BUT THE BEGINNING WAS AWSOME!
"This "Monkumentary" probably should have been titled "A Gag Too Far". It expanded on the brief Gregorian Chant fad in the early 90's and features members of the Rhino Records band Big Daddy chanting songs. The video stars Judy Tenuta, Jaime Widdoes, Brett Hudson, Jeff Altman and Andy Kindler. Jeanne Basone is the bikini babe in one video. They perform Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Hey Hey We're The Monks and Losing My Religion among others. Directed and Produced by Brent Carpenter, Written by Dylan Brody. Copyright 1994."
What was really interesting about finding that parody CD is that about a week later, I found the original, 'real' CD in another thrift store.
Information about the 'real' CD this is based on.
