Just checked, the lyrics I used for House of the Riding Sun was by Robert Winslow Gordon published in1925, it appears the first recorded version was by Clarence Ashley in1933. No one knows who actually wrote it but it's traced back to 16th-century.

@richpowers No, I didn't mean House of the rising sun was Robert Johnson if that's what you thought I meant. I was just mentioning in general where the bands got these songs from.
