Software Defined Radio (SDR) has many applications, including using one in a DIY (Do It Yourself) Stingray project. "Stingray" is the name used to describe cell phone interception.

I am no expert on this but a read of the linked article makes me wonder if this is legal.  Maybe it should be researched in this regard before being promoted here.  Just sayin'

Not a Bad Idea

I also suspect it might be illegal, but no one can research it unless they know about it, and I am not qualified to research legality since so many things are illegal, more all the time.

There's a book in circulation revealing how average citizens commit an average of 3 felonies a day without realizing. Perhaps writing such a book was illegal.

Do we have a legal department?

More On the Stingray Project

As a journalist and operator of a news radio station the information about the conversion of SDR to a Stingray device is a significant news story. Let's call it that and not say we are "promoting" anything.

Reading deeper into this next link from the article we find that it's law enforcement and the government who've ostensibly been engaged in secretive criminal activity to spy on civilians, in collusion with Harris Corporation, itself a manufacturer of radio transmitters. This should be of interest to everyone and even this forum site is not such a pre-school operation that it should conceal information we have a right to know.

I do not agree that posting the first link was not promoting the activity since it gives details on how to do so.

Shall I delete the first link?

Regarding "There’s a book in circulation revealing how average citizens commit an average of 3 felonies a day without realizing. Perhaps writing such a book was illegal."

There is a distinction between reporting that illegal activity occurs and providing instructions on how to do so.

Neil

P. S.  I deleted the first link so there is no doubt about promoting (or perhaps a better word, enabling) this, kept the second link since it is a report on the activity.  Hope this is satisfactory.

Radio8Z Invents His Own Law

"Hope this is satisfactory."

It is not satisfactory and shows inferior judgement.

Things to Know

The original article, now removed by our moderator based on imaginary  concerns, was written by Cory Doctorow, co-editor of Boing-Boing, the highly regarded publishing site.

Cory Doctorow is well known for science articles

Mr. Doctorow does not publish how-to blue-prints for criminal activity.

We hope not to appear like hicks lacking in cultural awareness.

No

Radio8Z dreams on: "It is a policy of this site to not discuss moderator decisions publicly."

Your made-up "policy" is only a silencing mechanism to retain the dominance of the patriarchal authority.
