Many capacitors have a number which is not the electrical value, and I cannot find a cross-reference chart for knowing what they are. The numbers are like: 152, 562, 682, 822, 222 and many others. How does anyone look these up?

Cap Codes The standard way to mark small caps is to give the first two digits of the capacitance. The third digit is the number of zeros to append to the first two and the capacitance is then in picofarads.
For example 682 would be 6800 pF and so on.
If the number is less than one, such as .068 then the capacitance is in microfarads. .068 = .068 microfarads.
You will also find other markings, such as letters which designate other characteristics such as temperature coefficient, tolerance, and so on.

Continuing Education Thank you again Neil for advising those of us who audit the class here at Part 15 Academy. Now I know that I have a hundred capacitors of the wrong value. I didn’t know that before.

I am glad to offer help when I can. I recall how hard it was for me to get this type of basic information and am pleased if I can make it a bit easier for someone else. The dialogue that has been on this board recently is something to be observed with pride; the sharing of knowledge and experiment is great.
So this old war horse is happy to contribute when he can, yet he learns something new with each post read.
