A Neat Thought

August 27, 2011 by Carl Blare

Remembering the days in licensed radio it was always exciting to hear the station signal over the monitor system coming from the transmitter and tower located many miles away. That gave the real sense of controlling a powerful signal.

What I would like to do with part 15 is get the AM transmitter as far from the house as possible and have that sense of “distant listening” by hearing it over the radio.

Fortunately there is a spot out back which is 60 to 75 feet away where the whole ball of wax could be installed including 10-foot stick and buried radials.

The hesitation that is keeping me back is lack of a plan for getting the control cables out to the location. It would need to be safely laid underground, with power and audio.

Got to declare a starting moment and begin taking action.

Frequency Fermentation

August 20, 2011 by Carl Blare

Elsewhere I have described how my metal window frame is a 6-foot section of an indoor outdoor antenna for the SStran3000. On the inside the transmitter resides under a desk with a 2.5-foot antenna up to the base of the metal window frame where it is bolted in place.

Out on the front porch the top of the window frame is bolted to four upward wires that end when the porch roof blocks them, forming a small cage monopole.

Down below I had run a heavy-duty copper ground wire all the way across the basement and uphill 100-feet in the back yard to deliver the signal way up where it had been very weak.

Fast forward to this week, when every day I have noticed my station on the car radio up farther than ever before, and clear for a longer stretch after turning left, way, way up the hill.

Hit pause for the moment of discovery when I noticed that the long ground wire wasn’t even connected, because the jumper cable had been borrowed for a different use.

The wrap up.
Only the normal SStran ground-by-way-of-power connection was in place.

Conclusion: A quote from the Spirit of Part 15, otherwise known as Dog Radio Studio 2 – who said, “Part 15 is mysterious.”

Language Again

August 17, 2011 by Carl Blare

It was February when I wrote the blog titled DECENT LANGUAGE, and the subject of decent language is on my mind again, and for much the same reasons.

It was February when I wrote the blog titled DECENT LANGUAGE, and the subject of decent language is on my mind again, and for much the same reasons.

1.) We share a tradition on radio of “polite” speech, minus the vulgar language that is otherwise common in society;

2.) More and more programs, many from the internet, either have no limitations on language or push the edge;

3.) Most other media, especially movies and music, use even more “offensive” language than would be necessary to get their story across;

4.) Obscene language is standard in military, law enforcement and all “macho” situations where, for odd reasons, foul language is equated with authority;

5.) Public live entertainment, such as comedy mic nights, use floods of nasty talk way more than needed;

6.) Regular people of all ages have some friends where uncensored language goes.

There are two programs that bring my mind to this subject at this time: one of them has been on my schedule for awhile, the other only being considered…

The first is GEOLOGIC with George Hrab. George is a popular rock musician and very intelligent weekly podcaster who prefers to be as blunt as the mood strikes. I believe in the program.

The new one is RYE BREAD RADIO, a “live” comedy show from Chicago which is professional both technically and content wise, but with the “normal” blunt language of public entertainment. I’d like to run this show.

What I’m going to do as a temporary solution is wire up a “weak” second transmitter which will get switched on during these risky shows. That way I’ll be able to monitor the station, but the surrounding area will lose the signal.

Let me know your way of dealing with the language question.

Field Strength Meters

August 13, 2011 by Carl Blare

Previously on this website a link was given to a source for uncertified field strength meters, the advantage being that they were less costly than certified meters. The address was detectortechnologies.com, but that link no longer goes anywhere.

Does anyone know a source of low priced RF field strength meters?

EDIT: During a search I found this interesting RF meter, has anyone tried it?
