Ghost Mall

November 17, 2011 by Carl Blare

I guess most cities have evidence of old neighborhoods that were made extinct by the eminent domain development of super malls which shortly were abandoned and became blighted ghost malls.

If RF engineer Paul Thurst is right, the radio bands may be in store for a similar future. Read his blog “Trends in Terrestrial Broadcasting” written Nov. 11 on his blogsite:

Then think about what this could mean for Part 15 in the future, and please come back here and share your thoughts.

Radials Everywhere

Under present plans, there will be four distinct outdoor antennas, two for MW, and one each for LW and SW. Each of these installations requires ground radials.

Under present plans, there will be four distinct outdoor antennas, two for MW, and one each for LW and SW. Each of these installations requires ground radials.

1680 AM will be about 110-feet way up in the rear, placed as far away as possible so that indoor reception comes from “off in the distance.” 3-meter vertical with transmitter at the ground;

1550 AM will be about 20-feet toward the front side and share its tower with flowering vines. It is understood the vines could impede the efficiency, but will be a design factor. 3-meter vertical with transmitter at the ground;

13.560 SW does not yet have a definite location, but the idea of using the house or chimney for the high point of an inverted-V is being considered, but the main antenna element needs to be away from the building, so maybe not. But keeping it close to the building would minimize the length of the transmission line. The transmitter will be indoors;

164 LW is baffling because erecting a 50-foot vertical is desirable but possibly not feasible, so we need a “plan B.”

These installations each need ground radials. But instead of four distinct situations, perhaps some of them can be combined… like SW and LW sharing a single set of radials. An opportunity to experiment and invite opinions.

In the last program we began telling about quality radio programs available for use by Part 15 radio stations.

In # 16 we continue by mentioning more good programs available for use.

Greetings From 21-Meters

Using the shortwave transmitter designed by members of part15.us and named “Big Talker,” KDX-SW in the center of north america has been transmitting daily at 13.560mHz in the 21-meter band.

The 21-meter band spans from 13.500 to 13.870mHz and is usually fairly inactive from our location, but over a period of months we have scanned the band and found international stations operating on 18 different frequencies.

Most of the stations we hear are broadcasting in the Spanish language, suggesting they are active in the south american region, but the occasional English speaking station is heard.

This morning between 10:30 and 10:40 AM CST we monitored WWCR from Nashville, Tennessee on 13.845 operating with 100kW on their Transmitter # 3. The program in progress was from libertylive.com. According to the station website at wwcr.com the station also carries the popular GCN Network, home of The Alex Jones Show and Free Talk Live, two syndicated U.S. shows carried by many AM & FM stations and webcasters.

As of the present time we have not overheard any other broadcasts on our own frequency at 13.560mHz.

Life is grand on the 21-meter band.

The Complaint Line

November 12, 2011 by Carl Blare

Today is complaint day and I’m back in line with another one.

Today is complaint day and I’m back in line with another one.

I wanted to review the Radio Systems products for carrier current, but their rather paltry website, with no search facility, offers very little with no trace of carrier current.

Listen, kc8gpd, would you mind having a neighbor up there on Isolated Mountain?

I am not superstitious, and yet everything I try to do (today) seems like it can’t be done.

Let’s see, the SAM Broadcaster thing fell through, the carrier current went no where, guess maybe its time to think about ground radials out in the chilly wind.

Station in Distress

KDX Radio in the center of North America is unable to operate because Winamp crashes after about 1-minute of running. Cause uncertain.

KDX Radio in the center of North America is unable to operate because Winamp crashes after about 1-minute of running. Cause uncertain.

The latest version is 6.2 and no newer version is available.

Recent software changes:
Tuesday a couple of Windows Updates were installed;
Wednesday system booted up and Winamp streamed KDX all day without fail;
Wednesday evening added NoScript App to Firefox Browser, was unable after that to update our website at KDXradio.com, but RFB suggested a fix which made it possible to update the website;
Wednesday evening an update to Firefox was installed;
Wednesday evening an update to Thunderbird Email program was installed;
Thursday morning bootup fine Winamp run for 2-hours in non-stream mode;
KDX began a test stream during which to test the Flash Player access from our website but No Script was not allowing Flash Player;
Attempted to find a setting within No Script that would alleviate the Flash Player problem but then Winamp crashed;
From that time on every attempt to restart Winamp ended in a crash.

Attempted Fixes:
Did Registry Cleanup…Winamp crashed;
Disabled NoScript and restarted Firefox…Winamp crashed;
Turned Firefox off… Winamp crashed;
Rebooted…Winamp crashed;

We may resort to setting the computer back in time before all these updates, but does anyone have other suggestions?
