The newly posted Forum Guidelines and Rules are a welcome addition to the site and the links to definitions are very helpful.

In reading the description of Ad Hominen Attack, an important concept in argument and law, I found the example given to be an unfortunate example. Here it is:

Bill: “I believe that abortion is morally wrong.”
Dave: “Of course you would say that, you’re a priest.”
Bill: “What about the arguments I gave to support my position?”
Dave: “Those don’t count. Like I said, you’re a priest, so you have to say that abortion is wrong. Further, you are just a lackey to the Pope, so I can’t believe what you say.”

In that exchange I would have to side with Dave.

What seemed to happen was different than what actually happened. Here is my story.

On a sunny morning at the desk, 1680 AM brought a very interesting discussion about how truckers are underpaid for their services, when all at once the transmitter went off like a blown fuse. Only background static remained.

At least that was my first thought.

The AMT5000 had never failed like this, and I was terrified at the prospect that my favorite part 15 transmitter had so abruptly gone down.

But what really happened was that my arm had pushed a notebook against the big silver tuning knob on the radio and switched to 1690 AM.

By tuning back to 1680 the world was repaired, and I was free to wonder if the accident had been a “sign”, as many superstitious people might think, and if so, a sign of what?

Then all at once I knew what to do. Go immediately to part15.us and warn others about the hazard of notebooks being too close to tuning knobs.

Back when I opened the “Indoor Antenna Project”, which is still going on, I tested a baseboard ground run around the baseboard of several rooms down by the floor, and indeed it allowed the AMT3000 with my self-wound triangular shaped loading coil tune up to a perfect resonance, except that outside the house the signal only reached the sidewalk.

Tonight I devoted over 10-minutes to changing the ground, by removing the baseboard wire, and grounding the transmitter right below the floor with a clamp attached to the main I-beam that holds up the floor.

The I-beam is electrically grounded to water pipes, furnace ducting and has iron posts holding from the floor.

To tune the thing back up I needed to find a different tap on the coil but now the resonance is back to a peak and tomorrow we will be driving around in search of new footage covered on 1550kHz.

Part 15 radio is just large enough to escape needing a microscope.

Signal propagation under 15.219 gets better the higher the frequency, with 1700 being the best choice.

But around here 1700 is filled with loud buzz caused by the 2nd harmonic of licensed 850kHz, 5kW less than a mile away. On an S-meter the strength of the buzz is less than 1, down near zero, but it overflows to 1690 and a little bit to my channel, 1680, because it contains IBOC sidebands.

WHAT IF I put a well installed transmitter/antenna on the air on top of the buzz, right at 1700? The buzz would go away in the immediate area, being covered by silence.

AS LONG AS WE’RE AT IT we could transmit our audio on 1700, and together with the 1680 signal we would appear to have a very wide signal!

What could be wrong with that idea?
