Disrepancy Log

February 11, 2012 by Carl Blare

I recall the “Discrepancy Log” kept by the engineers at the TV station where I announced, and it was really bad if I got “written up” for missing an announcement or being late for sign on.

I recall the “Discrepancy Log” kept by the engineers at the TV station where I announced, and it was really bad if I got “written up” for missing an announcement or being late for sign on.

Now I keep a discrepancy log for a group of part 15 and internet stream radio stations, and there’s my name again.

This morning I got all the programs in the playlist, turned on all the carriers including two AM, one shortwave and three FMs, and started the Playlist at the right time.

I immediately went to work working on the carrier current project and recording a new show, until six hours later I discovered the stream server had never been started for my website and shoutcast. Write me up.

So I am here as a senior adviser to caution against having too many iron pies in the fire, or whatever that slogan is; too many bowling pins in the juggle, uh, too much texting on the highway, pay your bills on time, have an extra shoe lace.

Always remember your girl friend’s name and start your station on time.

How Does It Work

I’m not sure how the pages on this website work….. does everybody see the same thing on their screen, or do some of us see different features for some reason?

I’m not sure how the pages on this website work….. does everybody see the same thing on their screen, or do some of us see different features for some reason?

I am particularly interested in something I see on the left side of the screen about 2/3 of the way down…….well, right now something different is in that spot, but when I’m viewing the “Recent Posts” page, I see……. well, I won’t really say unless everyone is seeing the same thing.

What do you see on the left side of the “Recent Posts” screen about 2/3 down?

Wicked Ways

February 7, 2012 by Carl Blare

There’s no rest for the broadcaster and that proves we’re wicked.

There’s no rest for the broadcaster and that proves we’re wicked.

Listening to AM1680 I so often hear yelling and screaming in the background behind my fine program. I know what it is. It’s noise being picked up on the FM STL.

Yes, AM1680 is fed from an FM receiver tuned to 101.9, receiving a signal from 30-feet away, a bamboo tri-pod tower, cage-monopole antenna and Wholehouse 2.0 transmitter.

The background is from 107.7, a high power station which plays the worst music ever heard.

The Wholehouse rig is omni-directional, the FM receiver has a dipole aimed for best reception, but the high power station is on the same directional plane.

If I weren’t so wicked I wouldn’t have these little rest stoppers.

What I may do is have my house rotated.

Low Power Hour No. 23 is Ready

February 5, 2012 by Carl Blare

Low Power Hour No. 23 is titled “Start Up,” with good intentions of documenting the start up of a low power station on a typical morning, but the morning didn’t turn out to be typical.

If Intended

February 5, 2012 by Carl Blare

We have all heard the reasoning that “If God intended humans to fly He would have given them wings.” But what this idea by-passes is the fact that God gave man the ability to invent flight.

We have all heard the reasoning that “If God intended humans to fly He would have given them wings.” But what this idea by-passes is the fact that God gave man the ability to invent flight.

So it is with radio. But man got the message backwards. When he, man, invented radio he made it big and powerful like one monolithic voice speaking to all from a giant tower.

What was really intended was that each man should have his own personal radio station, where neighbor A could broadcast to neighbor B and neighbor C could respond by broadcasting to A & B, all across America.

The only reason for a high power station is for regional weather and safety alerts, which could also be sent on smaller stations.

The part 15 radio stations of today are the Intended Stations under the Divine Plan, and our job is Sacred. Live for it and die for it.

Wording of Identification

February 4, 2012 by Carl Blare

There is only one rule defining voice content broadcast on a part 15 “intentional radiator” type station, all other rules distinctly describe technical allowances.

There is only one rule defining voice content broadcast on a part 15 “intentional radiator” type station, all other rules distinctly describe technical allowances.

The exceptional rule is not grouped with the Part 15 section of the rules, but is in Part 73 – RADIO BROADCAST SERVICES

Sec. 73.3550 Requests for new or modified call sign assignments.

(1) Users of nonlicensed, low-power devices operating under part 15 of this chapter may use whatever identification is currently desired, so long as propriety is observed and no confusion results with a station for which the FCC issues a license.

At the time I found that rule we had already been operating for two years as KDX, and our reasoning went through a few contortions before adding a number “1” making our part 15 call sign “KDX1”, definitely not an ordinary licensed station.

Those contortions of thinking that lead the way to that change was our finding that “no licensed station has been assigned the call sign KDX”, “In the present time licensed stations are assigned four-letter call signs, whereas a few legacy three-letter call signs still exist”. The letter ‘K’ is typically used for stations west of the Mississippi, but at least one exception ‘KDKA’ was assigned before the dividing between ‘K’ and ‘W’. There are also a few legacy ‘W’ stations west of the River. But after tossing around all these thoughts, we decided that ‘KDX’ sounded too much like a licensed call-letter.

Now that I’ve shared the whole story about why we are KDX1, I move on the the new question I am actually here to discuss…

In our sign on announcement we say that we are a radio station operating under “provisions” of the FCC Rules Part 15. We obviously can’t say “Licensed,” so I wanted a word that most exactly reflected what the part 15 rules allow or enable.

Those would be usable words as well… “Under Allowance of FCC Rules Part 15” or “as Enabled by FCC Rules Part 15.”

Maybe “As Permitted….” but I don’t like that because it implies a “Permit”, which is in the same class as a “license.”

Let me know what you think about wording what our kind of “unlicensed legality” actually is, boiled down to a single word.
