Ad Placement

September 1, 2011 by Carl Blare

Twice now e-mail offers have arrived asking for ad space on our radio station website. Neither inquiry said one word about what would be advertised. Checking the websites of the offer maker showed an advertising agency representative of however many clients.

So I sat down and drafted “Policy No. 1: All inquiries for website ad space must include sample copy showing exactly what product or service would be advertised. If KDX has to ask, KDX will not ask and will not respond. Period.”

While the idea of $$$ is always provocative, communications companies (ad agencies) should at least know how to communicate.

What is your policy when ad offers come along?

Watch out for them solicited ad placements
Its nice when you get those emails asking if you are interested in allocating some web page real estate for an advertisement banner for such and such amount for a given period of time…blah blah.

Well since I have actually had the experience with this, let me give some advice….heed it or bleed it..your choice.

A lot of those advertisers wanting to place ad banners or ad links to your website may point your site visitors to mostly gambling sites outside of the US..usually located in the UK.

No big deal really. However here is the BIG catch..and pay attention here because this can really wreak havoc with your website and its page rankings and search engine placements.

Some of those gambling sites that are linked to are “black listed”. This means that if a crawler goes and scans your pages and finds that ad link going to a black listed gambling site..well guess what kiddies…….your site becomes a new entry in that black list and POOF….you just lost your page rankings and search engine placing and quite possibly totally blocked out by certain major ISP providers such as Comcast etc. You could very well end up wiping out years of hard work to get your site up in the rankings and search engine results as well as keeping visitors from even being able to display your site at all.

So DIG DEEP with this issue before jumping into the dark abyss of UNKNOWN side effects regarding those requested ad placements on your sites. Ask a lot of questions and most important of all…ask them for a direct link to the site the ad will link to so you can fully inspect it and search the black lists for it or any other site linked within that site, which can also put your site into a black list as well.

    Think…don’t sink!!

    Caution
I would be very careful with some of those ad placement deals. You do not want to end up with one that points to a site containing links to other sites that could be on a black list, or the site itself also be on a black list and guess what happens with your site?!!

POOF! Site blocked by a wide range of ISP’s.

Check them out real good before agreeing to even a simple text ad placement.
