National Conference For Media Reform

Posted on January 12, 2007

We made it to Memphis! Memphis is this year’s location for the National Conference For Media Reform. Six of us made it here…well seven if you count Bart, the dog.
We got registered and picked up our kits Thursday evening. We followed that with a trolley ride to Beale Street for great barbeque and live music.

The welcome kit included so much material that it will take several days to review it. There are copies of many magazines dealing with media, a copy of Eric Klinenberg’s book, “Fighting For Air, The Battle to Control America’s Media,” and much more.
My favorite item so far are warning stickers you can put on your TV set. They read, “WARNING. This device may dispense corporate media that lacks the diversity, skepticism and independent points of view required in a democracy. Www.freepress.net.
Friday morning starts with a general welcome session and a speech from Bill Moyers. Later in the day there are workshops and panels on a variety of media issues. These include media and elections, saving the internet, payola, radio. Records and the FCC, and more. The Rev. Jesse Jackson will deliver a speech Friday afternoon
Friday night ends with a Memphis Music Showcase Concert including the Bar-kays, Al Green’s Choir and FCC commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein.
