I am in the final stages of launching my station. It will be terrestrial (following Part 15 law) and simulcast on a stream (which I already have set up and has tested excellent).
As we all know, internet can be a real pain and the legalities are even more painful. SoundExchange is a bear in that you’ve got to report the metadata t…[Read more]
I called each of the 4 US organizations personally. I have found that the extra hassle of going through phone menus to get to a human has a bigger payoff than e-mail or other communications.
I guess I should’ve mentioned this in my earlier post, but each PRO has a license fee for terrestrial and streaming… so 2 fees for each…[Read more]
I like the idea of streamlicensing, but there seems to be an awful lot to have to deal with with them. Downloading certain things of theirs and all that. I confess, I might not understand their system entirely, however, just opening an account with someone and being able to make my yearly payment seems easy enough. I had also heard that they ha…[Read more]
Have just finished researching all this and talking to all the PROs, etc.
SESAC: don’t know, can’t get ahold of them for my life.
BMI: they have a specific Part 15 plan for licensing. I think all said and told it averages out to about $400/yr
ASCAP: $261 for streaming, terrestrial is FREE.
SoundExchange: $500 for starters, if you go over that…[Read more]

Well, I finally pretty much got everything in place in terms of my terrestrial environment. I have cleared my way for the 3 PROs and SoundExchange and I have a streaming provider ready when I pull the trigger.
I bought a WordPress site and I have it mostly built. I am waiting on a couple of little things (logo, etc), however, I am not…[Read more]
Can’t speak to lawyer’s fees, however, in NC the filing for nonprofit is $400. Not sure what the yearly stuff is after that. I assume that the $1200 you have includes lawyer’s fees?
Can you provide any other insight into the process?
For any of you out there who have run their LPAM station as a business, can anyone speak to running, or trying to run, a LPAM station as a 501(c) nonprofit business? How would this play against being Part 15 vs. being FCC recognized?
I figure if it’s cool that you could ostensibly run your Part 15 as a for profit business, I would think being a…[Read more]
Thanks everyone! This has been hugely informative and given me a lot of perspective I didn’t previously have. I will keep you all posted on forward progress. For the moment, however, I am going to stay terrestrial until I can get some cash under me.
Man… that was really informative!
Okay, so, I need to pay more money to stay legit. I did look up the Stream Licensing website and it seems rather easy to get going there. I think the initial price on the lowest rung isn’t bad to start with. I like the DJC/Adswizz. I did a little looking around there, but they also seem to be PC bas…[Read more]
I’ve been talking with Gary over at Securenet/Cirrus streaming. He says (famous last words) that I can pay SoundExchange $500 a year and that covers all publishing. He also said that with his service works well with StationPlaylist as the automator. He gives 300 listeners for the lowest tier. They provide apps, Alexa, iTunes support and all…[Read more]
Couple of quick q’s about streaming.
Was told it’s easier/better to have all the same equipment (i.e. Arrakis board with their automation software and then whoever (Icecast/Shoutcast) to host and send out your stream). But that seems like an awfully expensive way to go.
What do y’all do for streaming?
I was considering using Radiologik (I…[Read more]
Anyone ever have an issue with the green light not coming on? I finally got a chance to get my transmitter up and test it (I have the agile one set to 1700AM). I triple checked all connections and confirmed via the volt meter that the transmitter was getting the 16v DC power.
But no green light. Any thoughts? Oh, the power is definitely on…[Read more]
Everything finally clicked. I get it now. It’s a wonderful feeling.
So what is the last piece of the signal chain? The audio processor or the converter (if you use one)? If you aren’t using a converter and you’re using your balanced stereo XLR outs on your mixer, how are you summing them in the transmitter to mono (if you aren’t using a pro…[Read more]
I don’t believe mine came with the studio module. At least, I don’t see anything in the box that allow power and 3.5mm connections. It still comes in the big, gray plastic box.
I’m gonna talk to my girlfriend’s dad today and get his initial thoughts. I also plan on watching the DVD and see if it provides any insight. I also called Ran…[Read more]
I have a feeling that this is going to be an ever increasing, long thread. Ha!
I got my Rangemaster delivered today and I didn’t get a power supply… unless that’s what this is in the Lenovo box. Or it could just be a Lenovo computer power supply, which it looks like, not wall wart. I would assume that I need the proper power supply?
I’m go…[Read more]
Are there/would there be any benefit in having a certain set of information around? If you aren’t breaking the law, does the FCC have any real reason to pay you a visit?
