new gear for a new year

Posted on January 9, 2009

Free Radio London gets much needed new gear for the new year.

Free Radio London gets much needed new gear for the new year.

My wonderful wife order a Podcastudio from Berhringer as a christmas gift. I have to admit, this package is alot more than i expected.

Before I got the new gear, i was using a cheap microphone from walmart and the mixer provided by windows to record announcements, liners and i.d.’s. It worked but was not the most ideal setup for radio.

Most of the recordings i created were then edited using Audacity, wich i still use. Now with the Podcastudio, i can record directly to Audacity as well as mix other sources thru the five channel mixing board. It doubles as the on-air board too, all i have to do is plug in to the main out running to the transmitter or the soundcard on the studio computer.

The microphone is a solidly built Behringer Ultravoice condenser designed mostly for spoken or vocal work. It sounds great and feels like a SHURE SM58 as far as weight goes. It doesnt feel like your holding a cheap $9 walmart mic. The mic comes with a desktop stand.

The mixer offers the following:
channel 1 offers xlr and 1/4 ” jacks for the main microphone, bass, treble, trim and pan.
channels 2 thru 5 are fed with 1/4″ phone jacks, 1 each for left and right channels or just use the left channel mixed down to mono as well as a balance control. Left and right channel 1/4 jacks for main out.
Headphone Jack and Volume. Main mix, 4 segment led meter. 4 left and right input output rca jacks you can feed to you computer using a rca to usb interface provided as part of the package and buttons to monitor thru headphones for tape/cd etc.
Wrap around headphones, software and drivers are provided too.

Overall, if i had to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 id give it 9 1/2 only because Behringer put an ultra bright blue power on led on this mixer that leaves you seeing spots even when your not looking directly at the led. Other than that, you can use the mixer to record podcasts, shows, liners, i.d.’s or plug it directly into your transmitter or recorder and mix without a computer.
It really is a great deal at $99.99 from walmart online, if you bought it from Behringers website it would cost alot more.

I also like the fact it is compact, i really dont have much room here.
Here is the webpage if youd like more details.

Thanks
