I wasn’t sure if this would make a good forum or blog topic, so I flipped a coin and blog won. On August 10th 2012 at 7 PM EDT, the National Association of Low Power Broadcasters held it’s first meeting. It was a small meeting, but it means alot for the future of part 15 radio and the radio industry. I think being a member means being a part of a potential revolution. A revolution in which the radio airwaves are given back to the 99% of this country who aren’t corporate CEOs. I envision a world where people have many choices in locally produced programming along with nationally produced shows that cater to them. I’ve had enough of the Clear Channel method of broadcasting, where a bunch of corporate CEOs who only care about profits fire all the local DJs and feed every station in the country with bland generic playlists. It’s time the listener has a voice in what they hear. I think the NALPB member stations can be the voice of the listeners. I also think being a member means being able to help local talent reach a national audience. There are many low powered stations that play independent local music. Using the propoed network, these artists could be featured on stations in different markets, and possibly gain a following. I see this organization as being something that has been long overdue. I am proud to be a part of it.
