Hi everyone! My name is Stuart Carlson, and I’ve owned a Part 15 FM CHR-formatted station called Blue 96.7 at my college apartment for three and a half years now. It used to also broadcast on 1650 AM, but there was an unavoidable hum on the signal, so I phased that out after a year of broadcasting.
I first heard of Part 15 broadcasting in December 2017 from a great friend of mine, Chad Beach, and I was interested in investing in equipment to broadcast my own radio station – even if it does have an extremely limited range. Chad agreed to be my station voice, and Blue 96.7 was born on January 14, 2018. In addition to voicing, Chad produced a lot of my imaging at the start, but I slowly took over as imaging producer as I gained experience.
At first, I was only broadcasting from my apartment and my parents’ house, but I eventually added an AM signal at my apartment which remained on the air through 2018. In August 2019, I decided to take Blue 96.7 to my mom’s workplace, where the most people listen to my station now. In the latter half of 2020, being the huge radio jingle geek that I am, I decided to take an electronic music production class in college, and I produced (and sung in) my own original jingle package for Blue 96.7 in late 2020 and early 2021.
I started regularly doing live on-air shows when the station was born, and they became voice tracked in early 2019. I would mainly broadcast in the evening, but by late 2019 I switched to the morning. I did so many VT shows in the morning that I officially introduced my morning show, Coffee and Carlson, in March 2020, just a few days before the pandemic hit. My morning show is still going strong today, even though it’s on hiatus for a couple weeks as renovations are being made in my apartment and I navigate a busy schedule.
I use three separate WholeHouse FM Transmitter 3.0 models for my FM signals, and I used the Talking House for my AM signal (I still have it today despite not being touched in over two years). I use MegaSeg automation on a MacBook Pro, and I use Audacity and Adobe Audition to put together my imaging. I used Ableton Live 10 to create my jingle package.
I have airchecks of almost every radio show I’ve ever done on the station, and I would love to showcase it on this site if anyone is interested! I was wondering if there is a way to post audio clips on here?
Feel free to check out my SoundCloud account to hear all the imaging I’ve done on the station over the years (click the play button next to any audio clip with the Blue 96.7 logo on it – or just search Blue 96.7 on SoundCloud if you want): https://soundcloud.com/stuartrcarlson
I am so excited to meet other Part 15 station owners on these forums! Thank you so much for reading!
I do Canada’s equivalent to part 15 with a Procaster on AM 1630 in Toronto with a laptop running Play It Live, and a Schlockwood 200 for processing.
Nice to hear about your radio endeavors.
Not sure if audio will post on the forum or not as I have only posted pictures.
This section is not on the forum and doesn’t seem to be a provision for uploading here.
Yeah those Talking Houses have a reputation for humming and a few videos on Youtube show what some have done to lessen it or eliminate it.
