The electric power was off for an unknown length of time while I slept.
This fact would have gone undetected except for traces found in clues given by certain equipment.
The first sign was the C.Crane Radio Plus being turned OFF. I never turn it off, only turn the volume down.
The second clue was refusal of the Shoutcast Servers to allow starting… they gave a message… “FATAL ERROR!! This Server is already in use!” … That’s not literally true, but I know what it means: the LAN IP address of the computer is changed.
When the power is cut the LAN addresses handed out from the Router get booted in a different order like your phone number suddenly changing.
Getting it all reset takes awhile and lasts until the next power outage.
Which arrives at the question… why can’t the electric company notify customers when they plan to cut power?
The harddrive that gets saved could be your own.

Total posts : 45366Hi Carl. If you need specific computers to have set IP addresses, you can configure your router to always assign a particular IP address to each one. It’s usually based on the MAC ID of the computer, and generally called IP Reservations or something similar.

Total posts : 45366Thank you Artisan, I am 88% sure you are correct.
My small amount of doubt rises from the fact that the Majic Jack Telephone, connected through the router, seems to be a “first come first serve” device that grabs the first IP address in the chain.
Hmm…. I just realized that if I tell the computer to accept the 2nd available IP address instead of the first one, it would never fail…
It’ll be interesting to explore and I’ll publish a full report here in seven thick volumes.

Total posts : 45366Maybe for a few seconds during the night but that’s enough.
Got so tired of resetting the stove clock I just say to hell with it.
The computer doesn’t care because the battery back up kicks in.
My station goes off and comes on again.

Total posts : 45366Carl your router should prioritize and assign the reserved IP addresses first. The rest of the devices would then be assigned the dynamic addresses after that.

Total posts : 45366Mark, you bring up a very good point for a serious radio station… have a battery-backup system, I guess what’s called a UPS (Uminteruptable Power Supply).
A UPS protects against unplanned outages and can also be good hard-drive insurance… I heard that a sudden power-off can damage a hard-drive.
My station was turned off last night, but some nights is on all night.
Alright. It’s on the “Purchse Order” list along with private jet and ocean-going yacht.

Total posts : 45366So I was sitting here searching for a data sheet on an old transistor when FWOOP! all the power went away.
My brain reset to zero and I was sitting there very dumb when BLOOP! all the power was back.
I still need to step out on the front porch and shake my fist toward the distance, wherever the cutoff was done.
This whole civilization and society could be stopped cold if they cancel the power.
We need to talk about this at the ALPB.
