I recall many years ago while I lived in the Cincinnati area that there was a tropo situation where repeaters from the Southern US were booming in on the 2 meter band. I could operate a repeater in Asheville, NC with my handheld from my front yard (2.5 watts into a rubber duckie).
It certainly can get interesting.

West Hartford, Connecticut, I had all
my radio stuff set up in a corner of a
little apartment.I didn’t have a Part 15 station at that
time, but there was a ham station and
I did DX AM, FM, and TV here and there. So one October night I got a channel 15 or
16 from around Washington, DC on my
little black and white portable TV with one
of those UHF antenna loops attached to the
set. The signal was good. They were mentioning
all kinds of things about the Washington DC area,
so even though I never got an ID – it was the local
news, so it was pretty apparent that was the location.I never saw it ever again. But it was cool.
Best Wishes
