I already purchased the wiring harness adaptor the same night i bought the radio, i avoid butchering wires at all costs and it looks nicer even if it will be tucked in behind the radio and dash.
While i waited for my wife to finish her class, i had time to listen to the radio a bit.
Keep in mind, my dash is still opened up and the radio was just sitting inside the hole, so it looks bad with the gapping hole but doesn’t affect the performance of the radio, it just bugs me a little. Okay a lot!
So while I was waiting i had a chance to mess with the functions of this receiver and let me tell ya, there are a ton of features. Some are pure fluff, like the lighting which can change colors or pulsate with the music.
Remember color organs? If you are parked somewhere just listening to the radio with the lights flashing with the beat and changing colors then it really isn’t too bad, but could be a distraction to the driver especially at night.
Another fluff to me is the Infra red remote control, I wouldn’t use it since the radio is within 6″ of the steering column but could be useful if you have a back seat driver who has to be in charge of navigation and the music.
As Mighty mentioned, 7 dBf on fm is nothing to sneeze at compared to a lot of crap being sold at these big box stores. There is a 2 watt lpfm in Combs,Ky which is just barely a part of Hazard city limits.
While i don’t now exactly where the tower is, I do know they seem to be having some sort of technical problems with the transmitter or audio chain. There has been a bad hum, mono audio and modulation is low but despite that this radio pulled them very nicely even though i had to turn the radio up to 20 to hear them.
Distant stations were detectable at a distance of nearly 20 miles on FM, those stations were in surrounding counties, i was on high ground. Even a repeater was heard, albeit with a lot of static and in mono.
The seek function mutes station’s too weak to be worth listening to, well unless you own a low powered fm or like to dx then you might want to use the manual tuning feature, if it’s there this radio will lock on to it and like most receivers will switch to mono.
The RDS feature is good although I think it has trouble with long words, I recorded a video the other night but i hesitate to post it here since it might cross that line of deciency/indecient. The band name and the song is often displayed on the RDS around here, the band in the video i shot was One Direction minus a letter.
The RDS couldn’t scroll the bands name because it was such a long word or the RDS was having trouble on the transmitter side of things. When playing Mp3 from a cd or thumbdrive it had no troubles, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch all displayed the whole text as it scrolled.
Not a big deal for me since I do most of the driving and don’t really pay attention to the display on the radio.
I usually set it and forget it or my wife dials in something we both like.
So I have mounting kit and hopefully tomorrow I can mount the radio in the dash and test this baby out in style. Meanwhile, I will be doing the same thing MRAM is doing and moving our studio from the living room to a spare bedroom and part of that project is hooking up the origianl RAZ Chrysler radio to a power suppliy so that i can use the radio in the studio for dx’ing on AM and monitoring Blue Bucket Radio.
Before I forget, the AM did really well at night. I was parked under our carport which is mostly metal and station’s were booming in from all over the country incluiding WFTD 1080 Khz from Atlanta.
