The FRS Walkie Talkie’s usually go 1 mile at best. Cobra makes a nice one and or Midland and even Radio Shack has them. Now the FRS ones have 14 channels. GMRS as 22 and shares 7 of them with FRS. Had a Cobra pair before. Even the GMRS didn’t get out that far. It may have went 1.5 miles but was very spotty past ½ mile. I also heard MURS Radio’s did very well. As far as the first Radio you mentioned you can program the FRS frequencies into them or use MURS frequencies in them. You should know what frequencies they are because these Radio’s cover from 144-440 Mhz and if you don’t know what your doing those Radio’s could land you in trouble. I’ve seen on Youtube where some Ham’s used them for 2 meter and 440 HT’s. But as far as unlicensed you can also look at CB Walkie Talkie’s too but don’t know how that will work for you. They’d cover more than 5 miles that is for sure. As far as UHF Radio’s your stuck with one of the two services FRS or MURS.
