So, I'm changing my format to basic oldies again, with some classical music (If It Ain't Baroque) and historical jazz (Roaring Twenties & All That Jazz - 30's to 50's). At least for now.

I'm also putting a new focus on the Teenage Dreams shows. I've got a bunch that just need recording, including a follow-on to an early one, Dance Crazes. This time, we're focusing on the early to mid 1960s, and I've found some interesting ones. For example, did you know that one of the crazes was something called the Batusi, that arose from an improvised scene in the first episode of the classic Batman 1966 TV series?

It appears that there were new dance fads every few weeks back then, but we'll just be covering the most popular.

Unfortunately, we're not going to be streaming any more for copyright reasons. I might restart the SDR server, but we'll see.

I got some encouraging indications about my Public Domain Radio playlist this morning. I wrote up a summary of what I've been doing along with a list of the songs and posted the same copy on 4 part 15 related forums; mbcf.boards.net, hfunderground.com/board/index.php?board=44.0 (part 15 board), antiqueradios.com, and facebook.com/groups/part15broadcasters. Then immediately after that went over to my ZenoRadio page and was surprised to see I had 7 listeners spread across 3 countries! - I've never seen more than 4 listeners and two countries (one being New Zealand). For some reason Zeno seems to count Canada and the U.S. as one country.. when there's only 1 listener (me) it says 1 listener and 1 country, but the map always has Canada and the US highlighted.. so I don't know what's that about..

But then within a few minutes it started climbing, 9, 11, 14,.. 17 listeners spread across now 4 countries! It was exciting watch the numbers climb... Then I lost 2 of them .. but, over an hour later I still have the same 15 people from four countries tuned in! -constant, not coming in and out.. whoever they are my playlist has held them for over an hour now!

At 5:20 this morning I had 17 listeners across 4 countries:

1100

It's now 6:45 and it's been holding at 15 listeners amongst 4 countries:

1101

I don't know what two countries these are..

What?.....so I walked over and through the fence we introduced ourselves and I said you can get this at your place, I am on 89.9 do you have a radio?.....I saw a sign up on the mail boxes, is that you? Yes that's me, I think we have a radio, yes we have a stereo but it hasn't been used in a long time......Well it's time to use it now I said.
I love the 60s, I hate what you hear now.....well enjoy, besides the music there's the old radio shows at night.....if you want to listen outside and you don't have a radio I give out radios to anyone that wants to listen....That's OK, I think there's something that hasn't been used in years, I'll see if it works. But there's an older stereo inside. Then the usual questions.......how far do you go........around this area......are you broadcasting all the time?.........yes 24/7 but I may turn it off once in a while for this and that but it will be back on.
You sound just like a regular station, how do you do that? How do you get songs and jingles to sound like that?........It's an automated broadcast program that does it all......as you see I am out here but it runs itself......Can I get it on my phone?.....yes if it has an FM radio,
So 3 known listeners now, Maybe a couple unknown, who knows. Advertising pays off.

So, after some transmitter failures, computer failures and a lot of rethinking what Artisan Radio should be about, here are the plans.

As before, there will be 4 x 6 hour blocks of programming.

Artisan Radio as a broadcast venture will play all public domain material. Roaring 20's (Jazz), Tin Pan Alley (1900-1930 popular music), Historical Classical (1920s and earlier), Early Detective Book Readings, Historical Vocal (1900-1930) and another hour TBD, probably OTR.

The broadcasts will go out over-the-air via a BETS-1 certified FM transmitter (still to be purchased, although the old Decade appears to be working again, not sure if it can be trusted though), streamed and also be available via the Artisan Radio SDR Server.

Thus, no copyright issues.

There will be a parallel stream for my own listening, from my own record collection, consisting of JukeBox Hits (1950s and 1950s Billboard charting and Bubbling Under songs), Lost Jukebox (obscure 1950s and 1960s music), If It Ain't Baroque (Baroque Classical recordings), Vintage Jazz (from the 1930s through the early 1950s), Divas and Divos (the greatest voices in Opera and Classical Music), and finally, our own produced show, Teenage Dreams.

That will be transmitted using the newly acquired ProCaster. Because of copyright issues, and broadcasting issues (i.e., it's not BETS-1 certified, only RSS-210), the stream will not be readily available to anyone else, either via a stream or the SDR. Actually, it may be, but it will be password protected so that only I can listen in. I know that works with streaming, as I've experimented with IceCast, but not sure about the SDR (in which case I won't do it).

It would be nice to swap the two over-the-air transmitters, but unfortunately, Canada's rules do not allow RSS-210 transmitters to broadcast. I've listened to the ProCaster and even without the built-in audio processing, the sound quality is good enough for what I want to do and listen with. With the audio processing, I imagine it could be even better.

I have been trimming my playlist removing some songs that I don't like that much and some stuff really outside the scope of the format. I have too many songs anyways and adding more is redundant as it would rarely be heard. 2000 songs( I have a little more) is a good enough playlist and if a listener(including me) hears a song they really like they want to be able to hear it again sometime. My current playlist is as shown in Salamandra is a bit over 114 hours in length so listening 24/7 it would take over 4 and 1/2 days to hear a song again, could be double that depending where in the rotation it is and songs being 2 to 2 and a half to 3 and a half minutes long.
I am also going to do the tedious job of going one by one renaming the tracks as 500 songs or so don't have the song name and artist and just show as track # or "unknown", just a bit each day. That is so if I ever have to pay for the music license to play copyrighted songs I would need at least the song and singer/band if a log was asked for. But so far no one in Canada cares or knows about BETS-1 stations. I don't even get a reply back when I contact and ask about it.

Why am I going back to FM?, first of all it's easier to get listeners. Second, only FM transmitters are considered broadcasting equipment certified BETS-1 and no AM is, which means I can't broadcast to the public and be free to tell people it's there by flyer or however.
I now have to keep it quiet as I am not supposed to be broadcasting( even a station ID can be seen as intent to target the public) as a Procaster AM is not certified as "broadcast equipment" e.g. NOUO in Winnipeg for broadcasting with a Procaster which means it has to be for me and no one else. There are two certification categories in Canada. You don't have this in the USA.
For the people in the USA we have more allowed field strength here, significantly more than the USA at 3 meters so the main problem is space on the band not too little power to be of any use. I won't be "making AM radio great again", I need a new slogan.
I have a flyer made for the community mail box for when I switch ... had to reduce the size/quality of image to be the size to fit here. I think if you click on image it gets better. I will post a web site I made for free when I publish it with a link to it.

I just posted a detailed description of the Canadian copyright rules on my Blog. Basically, any performance (record) published 1964 and earlier, and whose music creator(s) passed away 1971 and earlier, is in the public domain.

There's some vintage jazz that falls into that category. Most acoustical records, and a fair number of 1920s and 1930s electrical era records as well. So I plan on doing some jazz at the very least.

The nice thing about classical music (nice in the public domain context at least) is that since most composers (except modernists) passed away quite a while ago, all their music is in the public domain. That means that there are a large number of classical records from the early 1960s and the 1950s that sound great, and are free to use for any purpose in Canada. So we'll be playing quite a bit of classical, opera and vocal in our programming.

The challenge is that many of the pieces are quite long, so don't fit nicely into predetermined programming slots.

I would like to do some drama works as well. Book readings are an option, as is OTR. However, there's a catch with OTR in Canada. Unlike the U.S., where copyright had to be registered with the Library of Congress for quite a while (and most OTR wasn't), in Canada, copyright was automatically assigned once the work is created. Typically, for something like OTR it would be the scriptwriter. The performance rights would be complicated, but since all the OTR I would be interested in were performed 1964 and prior, the performances would be in the public domain anyway.

So technically, OTR whose scriptwriters passed away in 1971 or prior should be in the public domain. Of course, this would be for scripted shows only, such as The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, etc.

A big issue, however, is that quite often, the scriptwriters are unknown. There are some OTR sites that publish some information, and I've done some exercises in the past of going through and determining which episodes of some shows (on a very few shows) are in the public domain. But it's a big pain.

Then there's the "Rule of the Shorter Term" in the Geneva convention. It states that if a work goes out of copyright in its home country, then it goes out of copyright in all countries observing that rule. Canada observes it. But the CUSMA trade convention prevents it being used for the U.S. If CUSMA goes away, as it is being threatened, then OTR (most of it, scripted anyway) in the public domain in the U.S. would automatically be in the public domain in Canada.

Finally, we still plan on having 4 x 6 hour blocks of programming. Some slots, like vintage jazz, will be randomized playlists, while others will be rotation files with predetermined music and/or shows.

As I've stated previously, I plan on bringing back the Artisan Radio Blog.

This time, however, it will be done a bit differently. I've mentioned that I've been experimenting with Forum software, phpBB to be precise. This time around, I will be using that software to implement the Blog.

There are a number of advantages to this. One is that I can manipulate permissions to be the only one who posts, while letting others reply to those posts if they desire (while also providing a moderation mechanism). Another is that it provides an easy mechanism to separate Blog posts into various topics.

I was thinking of starting up a parallel Forum to this one, focusing on Canadian content only, but have decided against it. I have no desire to compete with Part15.org, but rather to complement it, and the Blog is the best way to do that.

There are plenty of Canadian-only considerations and interests that may not be of interest here. So I believe there is room for both.
