A few additional comments will probably be posted
about this. After being in a new location for about
a year - I finally got the SS-Tran back on the air.
I built this transmitter when AMT-3000 kits had been
available for about a year.
It was used outside at the old location for a long time.
So I cleaned it up today, got the dirt marks off and took
a bunch of remote cables and some mods off of it and
got it running indoors with a 9 foot antenna.
The 1690 kHz signal blasts through the house and yard,
and goes beyond, I'm sure.
It may be a very long time before I do another outside
installation with a big loading coil, 9 foot stick, and ground
radials. (That was fun.)
So it's running, with music from my son, who is a jazz
musician. I have a bunch of transmitters - but on FM, right
now - I'm using a Whole House 1.0 version board, which I
just fixed. If it's going 50 feet, I'm lucky. It is only meant
for the house and yard. So it's on 107.9. If I go out to the
car radio in the driveway I don't hear it on the car radio. Instead -
I get a Boston 107.9 eighty miles away. (I'm in Hartford, CT.)
I just had fun getting the HH Vers. 1.0 running.
I'm not even transmitting very far and yet - this is magic!
I've got a little mixer going. I've got to wire up the
professional on-the-air light that was given to me.
Next thing is to bring the antique radios out and put
them around the house.
A very close friend of mine lives about 800 feet away.
Might he hear it?
I don't know. But this is really great!

It cheers me whenever the SSTran transmitters get mentioned because they are such excellent transmitters.
It is our duty to keep the radio hobby active in these times when everything is being engulfed in Wi Fi virtuality.
In the same way old-time locomotive engineers shoveled coal into the hopper we must feed programming into the modulator.
There is no concern that morningDJ will tell me off right now because I'm not currently in a Rich thread.

And now back to MICRO1700s rebuilt equipment.
I always loved the sound my AMT3000 provided, the coverage wasn't all that great however. The TH5 I had easily had triple or more the coverage the SSTran had but was nowhere close to the audio quality of the SSTran.
My range actually increased with the SSTRAN. I think it was because of the antenna matching I did. I was using the same antenna/coil with the TH5, but wasn't getting any consistent range. That antenna / coil did give improvement over the built in ATU and a 102 in. whip I was using, which gave improvement over the provided wire the unit came with. Each step was progress.
I wish I had an open area in a field to install the transmitter with some radials. I think it would be better than my roof install.
Regardless, the SSTRAN sounds excellent. Setup is easy and using an external coil and antenna makes the range really decent.
I want a AMT5000. It is on the list when I get back from Colorado in a week or so.
Yeah, this is the beginning of a new
Part 15 station. The SS Tran is what makes
this really interesting. Sorry, I am trying to
send this note on a tablet, so just bare with me.
Well anyhow the other cool piece of this is to
make an inovative indoor transmitting antenna.
We have a back porch that literally sticks out
into the backyard. But there is no 120 volt ac
there. Also, we are on the second floor, although
I have a space in the cellar where it could go.
Whatever. This is all fun to me. I don't care.
And after this gets going I have some other
goofy Part 15 project to do. The next one will
probably be to fix the Part 15 13.560 MHz
transmitter that I built a couple of years ago.
If it can be fixed. This DC bus is shorted
somewhere. It will either work or some
components will cook. By the way, the 13.560
rig is based on the Big Talker project from Carl
and a bunch of other guys such as Neil and
MRAM????
