This is an unusual move for a class D AM broadcast station.

Especially now, in the year 2015.

If what I read is correct, WRCR is making

a big move.

From 1300 kHz 500W day, about 83 watts (?)

night to 1700 kHz 10,000 watts day, 1000 watts

night (the usual deal for an X-band station.) They

are also running IBOC.

There is A LOT I could say here.

I can't remember where in NY they are and NY

is big.  I'll have to check that.  I just wanted to

get this up on the board now.

How many Part 15 guys that we don't know about

will get blown away Monday on 1690 and 1700?

Will I hear it in Connecticut?

Will you hear it?

Let's see.

Best Wishes,

Bruce, DOGRADIO

Yup and as I stated in another thread a local part 15 station here in my city called HIR (for short) is operating on 1700KHz. They NEVER check their frequency for clearance, so what if that station (HIR) is found to be interfering with that licensed station's signal?

I'm not posting this as a complaint, just covering a matter that has been brought up in other threads about knowing what's on your chosen channel on a daily basis so you know what signals you might be competing with.

The AM broadcast band is kind of strange, in that some stations are allowed a clear channel for thousands of miles from their antenna location and are expected to service areas that are not commonly getting their signals during the day at night after local sunset. Such as WFAN from New York City on 660KHz.

If clear channel stations start setting up on the X band, where many part 15 stations are transmitting, many across the US could get warnings for being on a clear channel frequency.

To be truthful here, not a lot of those part 15 stations keep up on what authorizations the FCC has recently acted on. The ones near me are more concerned with getting local news and local events on the air on their AM stations than they are concerned about future FCC actions and authorizations.

Now that this station (WRCR) is going to be occupying 1700KHz, which is the home frequency of HIR in Norwich, CT. That part 15 station could get a warning for being on a licensed station's frequency. Or at the very least, it is possible, if someone local wants to listen to WRCR.

Bruce.

Id think thet would get a NOUO.  I wonder if HB has their back.  They may want to join the pro FM movement now.  What about talking House Transmitters? How about iAM?  Will these folks merge to FM?  Stay tuned as AM is threatened.

Very good TheLegacy

I'm glad you're 100% on track with what I was thinking, without me actually saying it.

Plus the fact that HIR owner registered a website under AM1700.org If he has to move to another frequency, his website would no longer reflect upon his new frequency. So he'd would have to register a new one.

That's why I do not recommend using a frequency in your station's website name or URL, you never know when you'd have to move to a new one.

Bruce.

If you notice with my station I use a shorturl redirect domain. That is so I can use free websites and if they mess up I can just change on a dime and yet the short URL is the same.  I pay pennies a year for that redirect domain.

If the 10 kW day/1 kW night comes on and it's too close to the

Part 15 station, I think the Part 15 station

will be crushed.  In my opinion, I don't

think anybody will notice the Part 15 station

in that situation.  I would change frequency

anyway not to be crushed.

When my Part 15 was running, it was on 1700.

Then I heard another Part 15 station (at least

they said they were, I'm not sure - they might

have had their Part 15 transmitter up on a

tower) so I went down to 1690.  It was dead clear

during the day. At night my signal got crushed.

However -I couldn't hear anything on 1700 at night -

from that other Part 15 or whatever -

Whatever that local 1700 was - it

must have gone off in the evening.

So - just for fun - I rigged my station to automatically

switch from 1690 to 1700 at sunset - and back to 1690

at sunrise.  (Sorry to those who have heard this

story so many times.)  It was a goofy thing to do.  From

an engineering standpoint it was a blast, though.

As mentioned - my 1690 signal got crushed by

interference at night anyway - so why not?

Back to the present.  Let's see what happens on Monday.

I'm getting out my Radio Plus Quantum DX Loop

for this one.

Best Wishes,

Brooce, DOGRADIO

From about 7 AM CDT to sundown Denver time we've got a 2nd harmonic of a local station blotting out 1700 kHz, so I'm guessing that my only chance to hear New York in full power will be about 6 AM local.

850 khz, right?  (Gee, I sure know my math.)

This actually makes the whole thing more

interesting, I think.

How much power does the 850 run when

it's operating?

850 is 5,000 big ones and it's less than a mile from my campus.

Brooce MICRO 1690/1700 Dog Radio Studio 2 NOISE AND STATIC RADIO WIFE 750 asked: "Can you hear KOA in Denver?

ANSWER: Yes. When the local "Gospel Voice" at 850, with 2nd harmonic on 1700, leaves the air at 1-hour past local sunset, sunset Denver time, it's amazing how quickly KOA becomes dominant and can be listened to most of the time.

Once, very long ago, probably in the

1970s, I heard a KOA ID pop up out

of the clutter on the 850 channel - and

that was in W. Hartford, CT.  I also heard

KOA in San Francisco, CA in the 1980s.

The same station on the east and west

coasts.  And the only one, I've ever heard

 in both places.

Anyway, it's just a few hours from sunrise,

here in CT.  (Monday morning.)

Will WRCR be there on 1700?

Brooce, Micro, uh Dog, uh, WIFE,

um, 1690, er. 1590, um

WRCR was licensed to Spring Valley, New York, just out of range of New York City toward the northwest.

With the change to 1700 WRCR will change city of license to Ramapo, NY, their signal reaching closer to NYC.

After more than an hour of monitoring this morning from 4:45 to 6:01 AM CDT, I receive KBGG from Des Moines Iowa and hear nothing else.
