Thanks to a listener donation, we will now have a mediumwave (AM) counter-part! WHAR-AM will sign on 1270 Khz hopefully by this Friday. This station will be 24/7 and will not stream online until we can get a second studio computer.
Programming will consist of Democracy Now Radio, DKFM Shoegaze, Somewhere in Time with Art Bell, Low Power Hour with Carl Blare, Wiretap with Johnathan Goldstein, WHAR-FM Simulcast and many more shows! Stay tuned for WHAR-AM updates.
Over at the KDXradio(dot)com Part 15 Page are the National AM/FM/LW/SW Dials which, along with Mighty 1650's Part 15 Map, show all the Part 15 Stations.
By this coming Friday the new WHAR-AM will be added to the National AM Dial.
Congratulations and Welcome to the new AM station!
@ATrain,
is there a way to auto download the latest DN episode and change the dynamic file name to a static one for the automation to play out?
i had it doing it before with task scheduler and wget but it lost the task for some reason and now i can't rediscover the code to get it to auto download via rss again.
if you have the code for task scheduler and wget could you email it to me for the various fields.
thanks
Ps: also sent this message to you via the contact page.
Congradulations Atrain! Look foward to checking out your stream when you have it up and running.
Carl, I like your chart a lot.. First time I recall seeing it, but it looks like a lot of stations are missing??
I guess I'm a bit confused. I saw the video of WHAR-FM 92.9 and the 7 watt FM transmitter. I keep reading here about Part 15 rules and how the members of this website are sticklers for following the letter of the law. That WHAR transmitter must have a kazillion times more power than Part 15 allows.
What gives with this and aren't you afraid of an FCC visit, or am I missing something?
I think the video you're talking about is super old anyway. Besides he is a part of the fm initiative and well let's just say that just because it is a 7 watt Transmitter does not mean it is not a variable Transmitter. Key word variable which means 0 - 7 watts. you can run any Transmitter you want. Key factor is just so long as you don't go over the 250 microvolts per meter. so as you can see there is no cause for alarm. You can even run a part 73 Transmitter but again you would have to bypass the final amplifier stage meaning going direct from the exciter to the antenna output which would give you milliwatts or even microwatts at that point. I'm sure you may be A radio engineer and all of this certification crap being shoved down everyone's throat but hate to tell you certain certification only means that you're certified to sell a Transmitter from the United States to a United States customer. So yes you are free to buy a foreign Transmitter it is still your responsibility to keep the Transmitter so that the power meets the FCC Rules. So much misconception on what certified Transmitter means. those that care to do their homework would have read Tim's tests on how certified Transmitters made in the United States and tested in the United States labs violated FCC rules. So doing your homework will go a long way in this hobby.
I would disagree that there are "misconception(s) on what certified (Part 15)Transmitter means"..
While I am only vaquely familiar with Atrains choice of modificating a high power transmitter to conform to the Part 15 limits for his station, there is nothing illegal or even questionable about using that transmitter in that way...
Admitably I find it a little odd... It's like taking a Lexus and crippling it to the point so that it will conform to the rules of the road of a golf cart - But if that's what he wants to do, more power to him, by all means, he can do it. It's not going to bother the FCC, it doesn't bother me, and it shouldn't bother anyone else!
What Attrain has chose to do is basically the same as constructing a home built transmitter under Part 15 regulations and thus making it a FCC part 15 complient transmitter. There's nothing wrong with modifying an existing transmitter to accomplish the same goal.
FCC certified Part 15 transmitters undergo a series of qualifing test and are manufactured, but a complient transmitter is equally legal.
One good reason is wanting a Metal transmitter instead of plastic. Another is tht it could have better audio and controls that are easier to use. Those toy transmitters just don't cut it alot of the time in terms of audio and build quality. Some of the CZH modles are better than others and can often be fixed to comply with part 15 rules by adding all sorts of filters which again causes signal loss, but in the end has a high quality low powered signal.
I understand the first video I saw may be old, but a new one for WHAR-FM was posted in June of 2015 on Facebook. In it, he says that in the older video he had about 5 watts but "now I'm doing 20". I also understand that atrain is helping with the initiative, but am puzzled how running an illegal 20 watts can help that effort.
Again, I assumed that those using this website were advocating being legal, but working to change the rules for Part 15. I appreciate the fact that Thelegacy is giving the benefit of the doubt to atrain, and that is commendable, but from what I can see, a 20 watt transmitter is way over the top. Again, am I missing something here?
Would love to have Rich check in on this one......
Your assumtion about the members here advocating being legal is correct. You got a lnk to the video?

Here is the link to the YouTube video:
I pressed but nothing happened. 🙁
Google WHAR-FM and you'll see links to 2 videos. The one in question is the 8+ minute one.
Not sure why the link didn't work for you.
I watched the Youtube Link which worked for me...
Heard no mention of transmitter power... is it there?
Anyway, Atrain has NEVER said a single word about illegal power here at part15(dot)us and is therefore absolutely compliant with this site's rules and standards. What he may say on other sites is outside the jurisdiction of this site.
Besides, if he or anyone was running several Watts for so many years they would have been shut-down by now, so there's nothing happening here keep driving.
I always wondered if it was the same Atrain I've seen on HFU.
At anyrate, he's part 15 on part15.us so whats it really matter. I'm sure many of us have done our fair share of pirating. Atleast I know I certainly have. (Argh)
