Geeeeeze Tim, that's some thorough information... It occurred to me that the only licensing I have ever noticed to be displayed on a jukebox was for BMI, - but perhaps that's just because most jukeboxes I see usually also have a "BMI" display designed into them as if a logo or brand. I'm going to make it a point to look for the ASCAP and SESAC info in the fine print on a sticker or whatever next time I put a dollar in the jukebox... Not for reasons of acting as a licensing cop or anything, ! just out of curiosity.. BMI licensing is the only thing I've ever noticed before on jukeboxes.... hmmm... If it isn't displayed, maybe I could get a free beer for looking the other way.. I guess I might need to get a music cop badge on ebay or something first..
It's going to take the big boys getting miffed before any changes take place with regard to the suppressive rules being attached to the music broadcast and streaming activities.
I'm all for musicians making a buck off their music. Seems it should be spend money to make a recording and market it. Then reap the benefits of repayment because people buy the music. But just as all schemes, it seems the majority of the benefits are sucked off by all of the middle man profits.
I understand the problem and why streaming audio/video has brought about all of these fees; digital copies cutting into the profits. It's just to easy to find and copy A/V files.
Even so, the system that has evolved is a bit lopsided in favor of all the middle man operations and not so much the musician/writer that create the music. Even the works of artists long since deceased are being milked to support the scheme.
So the result, businesses are folding up. Jobs are lost. The outlets for the music will no longer feed the coffers. Sounds like a story line from the Untouchables where the Mob collects fees for "Protection" being self fulfilling by creating the need to pay the fee.
"That ain't workin'-That's the way to do it, makin' your money on the M'TV."
Release your music to the masses. If your music is any good, make your money by performing (read working) and not collecting from duplicate copies. Put the physical distribution business out of business and eliminate all these problems. Pay to produce it, pay to market yourself and if your good enough make your money playing in front of the people and be grateful that there is a whole industry out here that wants to promote you.
Distribution will take care of itself, the reason we're in the mess we are.
