Canada has/is retroactively extending copyright period for both performances and songs themselves, so we're no better off.  Although the public domain stuff that's available to us is far more than that in the U.S.  That's why I'm moving over to a format which plays only public domain material (which will be select vintage jazz - songs whose creators have been dead more than 50 years and whose performances were published prior to 1964 - and select OTR.  The changes that were made to copyright law in 2015 and coming once the TPP is ratified do not apply to songs and performances already in the public domain.

And even though both Mark and I have had experiences with SOCAN and ReSound which seem to indicate that they are not interested in unlicensed radio, I suspect that that is going to change.  And SOCAN, at least, is very interested in any form of webcasting, no matter where it comes from.

Seems more in the USA but there seems to be many different licencing organizations and now another one? If you are broadcasting you have to pay many different amounts of money to different sources....where does it stop. It all adds up to a lot of money, and radio promotes the artist's material by playing it. Used to be the only way you were introduced to a new song or artist was hearing it on the radio...radio is free advertising after all.

I hope Artisan's thought that here in Canada Resound and Socan may start to charge fees for over the air BETS stations doesn't happen and I don't think it will because we aren't heard by enough people.

Socan fees are based on your yearly operating expenses(we have none) and only commercial stations and businesses like stores etc. that play music have to pay Resound...oh yeah, if you are webcasting also, but then you are getting to a lot of people worldwide. But the fee is not that much. Big problem in my opinion is keeping logs.

Mark

I've attempted to pay the appropriate licensing bodies in Canada the appropriate fees for a long time now.  But I'm done.

It's getting far too complicated, potentially too expensive, and too bureaucratic for me to want to even worry about this any more.

It's public domain for Artisan Radio all the way now, moving forward.  That's why my station is temporarily off the air - it will take me a little while, but when I come back, it will be with the new format.  I won't have to worry about either my over-the-air licensing OR my wecasting licensing.  And I'll even be able to have archives (or podcasts, or whatever you want to call them) of my shows, which I halted due to the necessity of getting licensing with the CMRRA (which handles musical reproduction rights).

As far as I'm concerned, they can come up with dozens of different licensing bodies here in Canada, and it's not gonna bother me at all.

I have little to no respect for any organization that bites the hand that feeds. This monopoly needs to be halted. If It were not for the Radio stations that play their stuff no one would buy it. I say what needs to happen is that every Radio station in the USA stop playing USA recorded music for one year and let the USA based music industry die off like it should. UK music is better anyway. So no more USA artists would mean more Album Rock stations. Think of it you could only play The Beatles, The Who, Queen, Bryan May, The Kinks, Rush (Recorded in Canada not USA), Honeymoon Suite (Canada band), BTO and more. Yep we need to just stop playing all USA artists and let them all starve and beg to be played. I'll make another comment on this and try and make this a reality.

Just wondering but would this also count for remix music. I see lots of YouTube videos that are remixes of hit songs usually put in a Trap form. I am wondering how were they able to get permission to do that? I doubt they asked? I’m not sure if this is also just with media sites but from my understanding if you show credits, where to buy, etc. then you can get away with copyright material on your videos. Could this also work with streaming?

A boycott of licensed music.  Yes, the radio industry did exactly that back in the 40's somewhere.

It seems that when royalty payment was brought about the collective stations disgreed with the payment scheme.  So, they simply quit playing the licensed music.  Instead they played the "Indie" of the day - Cowboy or Country music.

That act catapulted that genre to the top and eventually a compromise was reached regarding the amount requested as record sales of licensed music plummeted.

Could happen again...

Mark, thanks.  I liked it too, but unfortunately because of all this licensing stuff (and I'm a stickler for details, I admit it), only I will be able to listen to it in the future.

You might want to try out my new steam when it's ready (I'll announce it here and other places).  I'd like to think that I'm bringing a new approach to vintage jazz (& pop) music (as well as OTR).

Well TPP has been signed by the 11 signatory countries involved. once it get's ratified by congress and it will be mark my words, streaming legal or otherwise is toast (along with just about every other aspect of this country from an economic standpoint) unless listen2myradio and other stream providers locate their servers in the czech republic where they still don't have reciprocal copyright enforcement we will lose all small independant streaming stations. i don't believe there is anyting that can be done to stop it at this point. it's a done deal.
