Hello all,
My neighborhood is serviced with undergound utilitles: power, telephone, and cable TV. I am constantly reminded by signs that before I dig that I need to call OUPS (Ohio Utility Protection Service) and they do a good job of locating things within feet.
I have used a method which locates buried wires within inches and I though I would share it with you in case you want to dig to install your new antenna system.
First, a disclaimer: This worked for me, your results may vary to the point of property or personal damage.
Tune an AM portable radio to the low end of the broadcast band where there is no station heard. Move the radio above the ground. When near a buried wire you will either hear a station or an increase in noise. As you move back and forth, you will form a mental image of where the wire is buried.
This will give you an idea of the location but not the depth of the wiring. My lovely wife and I use this method when we do plantings so that my cable access to this board is not severed by my shovel.
Again, use this only as a general guide and remember you could be killed if you make a mistake. This works well for the cable and telephone lines which are within inches of the surface of the ground but I would not bet my life on power lines which should be at least 24 inches down (and I won't bet on that either)..
