i propose we use the power of the newly available wireless technology to build out a nationwide (or even north american wide) adhoc meshnet that is completetely unfettered and independant of any government. there is a host of tech from multigigabit free space optics and long range high speed wifi to multigigabit ghz point to point links. green bay profesional packet radio group can be used as a model for this new system they have done it one a county wide basis in greenbay. it's a way around oligarchy control and their bought and paid for entrenched political puppets.

Not to be a party pooper, but there are lots of obstacles to do this.  Just in a few seconds I came up with:

1.  Cost. This technology is not cheap once you get past the consumer, cover your house, stuff.

2.  Real Estate.  Maybe a bigger impediment.  Where do you put the transmitters/antennas?  What about insurance?  Power?  Maintenance?

3.  Content.  You obviously can't use copyrighted material, so what are you going to put up on this network?

It would be one thing to build something like this for a small neighbourhood, another for anything larger than that.  In fact, I've often thought that this would be a much more viable way to do neighbourhood broadcasting than Part 15.  The potential range is far greater (at a cost, of course) and virtually everyone carries a listening device with them (i.e., a smartphone) as opposed to a radio.  Your sound quality is much nicer than AM, on a par with FM, and there would be no noise - you would either get the digital signal, or you wouldn't.

Plus it's 100% legal as long as you keep your ERP under 1 watt & use an antenna that has no more than 6db gain (I believe - I'm too lazy to look it up).  With no NAB and no interference to existing broadcasters.  This would be much better than getting 87.7 & 87.9.  However, there's still the issue of content, unless you create your own, go indie (with the appropriate permissions, of course) or broadcast stuff that is currently known to be in the public domain such as most OTR (until they go after that retroactively, of course).

Right now, I'm even wondering if ANY broadcasting outside of one's home is worth it unless you plan on operating as a business, and can afford to pay the copyright fees.
