First of all, I like the way the Part 15.US website looks now.
I know that you guys work very hard behind the scenes.
Thank you for what you do!
Anyway, has anybody heard of The Phil Hendrie Show?
It's usually on overnight. It's on about 150 AM stations, but
many of the stations are small ones. (Not like for instance,
Coast to Coast AM, which is on tons of "clear channel" high
power AM stations and even a few FMers.)
When I tuned the show in on local WDRC, 5000 watts, 1360 kHz, Hartford,
a few weeks ago, it just sounded like a typical telephone call
in show. But after a while, the telephone caller started sounding
very strange. Something wasn't right. Then Phil Hendrie started talking,
and he sounded like a regular talk show announcer. But, then there
were some other voices in the studio, and they were clearly "make believe"
characters.
It turns out that Phil Hendrie does most of the voices himself. The show
is sort of a goofy satire of radio call in shows.
I don't know if I like it or not, but somehow, I can't stop listening to it.
If you google Phil Hendrie, you will get his website, which streams live -
I think - and also has lots of shows from the past.
I have never heard a radio show where the main announcer does
voices of most of the other characters on his show. Except...
Oh. What's the name of that guy on KBX radio? Or is it KGX?
KEX?? No no, it's KPX, that's what it is. Now I just have to
think of the main dude's name who runs that station. Isn't
it Carter Snare? Fair, Flare, Glare, Pair, Dare?

Hi Bruce:
Name's Pair. Carl Pair.
Thanks for the knuckles up on this Phil Hendrie guy. I am looking forward to hearing his show of characters.
Maybe Phil might not be that great, but one of his characters might be really good.
Meet you back here after I check it out.
I went over and visited the site
It looks enticing, with his slogan "Truth is Our Bitch" and his many Aphiliates.
Unfortunately getting the podcast requires a monthly subscription and all my subscription money goes into snack food research.
His show starts after midnight so maybe one of his Aphiliates streams it.
I'll by doing some late night DXing on the computer.
I can't remember the name of that character. It
is a female voice, though.
I don't know how easy it will be for you to get the
show. I hope you can hear it. (Oh yeah, right -
maybe one of the stations streams.)
The show is on 3 radio stations in your state, but
the chances of any of the stations being near to you
probably isn't that good. (Meaning - your chances of
getting one of the stations on the radio probably isn't
that good.) (I think I said this all backwards, somehow.)
Best Wishes,
Bruce, The Dog Radio Group
P.S. There might be some of his stuff on YouTube
if you want to get an idea of his "approach" to radio.
You spell her "Phloatila", and I have been spelling her "Flotilla", but she's the same assistant who always seems too busy with unknown business to ever help me out.
I was thinking about her name today, and wondered if it might be "Flo Tilla", "Flo" being short for "Florence".
Anyway, you'd think that stations in my own state would be receivable, but these are not, nor are any of Phil's Aphiliates in nearby Illinois.
Of the many stations he lists, I think there will be a streamer in the bunch.
The plan of last resort will be to join his paid subscription for 1-month if I can't hear the show any other way.
That's assuming he allows subscribers to quit. It might be like Scientology, where they never let you go.
Oh how dizzy I am from trying Aphiliates in the central and eastern time zones, looking for two things.....
1) audio streams and 2) early start times for the Phil Hendrie Show.
Many stations don't have streams. The first stream I found had a terrible hum. Some stations don't start the show until 1 AM, otherwise stations start it at midnight.
I am now on WYAB in Flora, Mississippi, and I think the show will start at midnight Central.
Trouble is, I will probably be asleep. Maybe I should record it. Ya, that's the way to do it.
It's 3:34 AM in the middle of the night, and I'm saving the 3.5 hour recording I got of the Phil Hendrie Show from WYAB in Flora, Mississippi. It's longer than the ALPB Meeting.
I heard just enough of it while asleep to realize this guy is an amazing talent. His characters have strong opinions and remain called in on the listener line throughout the show.
The audio on WYAB sounds like a bad reel of audio tape with fluctuating volume level.
Thanks to Dog Radio Group for this program tip.
Phil Hendrie is not a "come from nowhere" talent.
By reading his "About" it shows that he has voice parts and acting roles on many TV series and in the movies.
He does radio because he loves radio.
His ability to invent character voices is distinguished by the fact that his voices sound like actual people, they do not sound "cartoonish".
He must pre-record and carefully plan some moments on his show, because he'll be talking over himself as his voices get into arguments.
The Dog Radio Group is an excellent talent locator!
Last night during sleep I recorded the Phil Hendrie Show from the stream of WYAB in Flora, Mississippi, and now being awake with coffee and a banana, I listened to the first 15-minutes.
The type of humor is exceptional. It is a "creep up on you" humor, that is not evident at first.
His first caller was a guy with a cause, someone who strongly believed that for women to find "raw sess", they should pick a younger man like the caller, and not an older guy for his money and power. The caller explained that older men need to use pills and women should know about this before they make a choice.
By about the 7-minute mark in the program I was laughing plenty.

Hi Carl!
Great job finding that! It's so weird how you first
think it's a regular talk show - and then you start
wondering what's going on - as if something isn't
quite right - and THEN you realize it's all a joke!
Yeah, he's really talented. Really talented. But, for
me, the novelty wore off rather fast and I'm not
laughing as much. However, I'm still listening to
the show. I think it is a real good idea to record it
at night and then play it back during the day when
you are doing chores or whatever. It is the perfect
goofiness to have in the background.
I have to go but I will return.

One last word about that last Phil Hendrie link... it has a huge number of free podcasts, I've listened to about six and am very delighted by the guy's ability to set up long form humor and keep it rolling.
Now tonight's DX activity... in the advance of a winter storm, that is right now just very cold, I was testing the carrier current at 970, one of those frequencies the Dog Group likes with many stations... when I signed off I got WGTK, Louisville, Kentucky, 5kW. But I'm not supposed to hear it, because their directional pattern puts a null in our direction (radio-locator.com).
