Not really a technical question but here goes
What is a decent/good price for a lightly used Talking House TH II AM transmitter.
Follow up.... If I can get said transmitter at a good price, is it a good xmitter to get my feet wet in AM broadcasting?
Any and all input appreciated
Thanks
If you are on the 'bay, try to hold out for a TH5.
If you dig thru the archives here, you will see info on the transmit quality of the older TH units. Inconsistent quality of audio is the biggest thing. They apparently get better as the model numbers progress.
I have a TH5. It works, audio is fair on it. The Talking house is pretty easy to get going out of the box. My experience is that it is a good place to start, especially for the money. I have learned a lot about AM broadcast with mine in the short time I have been messing with it.
In my case, I can say, don't expect a lot of range. I am struggling to get a "hearable" 1/2 mile. But everyones situation/installation is different.
Mine is currently running in small truck tool box on a metal roof. I am playing with antennas, and everything I do has helped. I will say this. It is hot up there! And it keeps going, enduring the hell known as Texas heat!
Good luck. Hopefully some of the more experienced will pop in here with some valuable info.
There are 2 versions of the TH v.5, one is straight out of the box and the other is "enhanced." The enhanced version has several modifications to the audio and RF output circuits. These mods are visable through the top enclosure.
I hope 22.95 including shipping is a good deal for a Talking House II cause my best offer was just accepted
If it works at all, it is worth that. Set it up in the room with you and do some testing to see what it sounds like. I push mine with an outboard equalizer that helps expand the sound some. It usually sounds ok. Keep us posted!
AM broadcasting will be a whole new learning curve
That's a good deal, from my experience, if it works. I've owned a number of TH 2's, with mixed results. Some worked, some just plain didn't radiate at all (all were NOS), even though they powered up and appeared to work. Audio is OK, and might just be fine, depending on what you're going to broadcast.
What is "NOS?"
For AM I'm thinking maybe rockabilly
NOS....New Old Stock..
New old stock that's what I thought. I imagine that's a good description of the unit I got.
I've been looking at antenna options, I don't have an ATU, can a loading coil be built that would work to move the antenna outside?
Any thoughts about programming? Rockabilly, healing zen type stuff, all pink floyd?

I recently built a coil using the SSTRAN model. It works, but you have to be able to tune it to keep RF out of the signal.
Alternatively, you can use a 102" whip with a short wire to the feed whip. That is what I done initially. Of course, you have to have an outside waterproof box to stay in compliance with the lengths of feed line etc. Further, the built in ATU will not tune with long feed lines.
