I just happened to be surfing on Ebay looking at radio equipment and found an SSTRAN AMT3000 on there for under $20. I was wondering if it's a good deal. Considering I'm a beginner, it would be extremely difficult for me to setup, BUT I could probably save hundreds of dollars if I could figure out how to set it up.
Unfortunately, the auction ends in 6 days. I don't get paid for another 10 days. I hate when that happens.
It would be a good unit to nab and help you become familiar with Part 15 AM transmitters. Over at the SSTran site is a page dedicated to configuring that 3000 unit to operate an outdoor 3 meter antenna system, as well as a page on constructing an outdoor 3 meter antenna system specifically designed for the 3000 unit, though that antenna system can work on just about any transmitter needing an external matching and loading system.
Just make sure you get the manual that came with it too.

Does anyone know if its possible to find pre-assembled antennas for the SSTRAN AMT3000? If memory serves me right, there was a guy selling them, but he stopped making them a few years back.
You must grab that AMT3000 and you will love it forever.
I just polished and dusted my two AMT3000s, and am listening to one of them right now at 1550 AM, broadcasting the stream from WCCO, 830, 50kW, from Minneapolis. It's past 10 and the Mischke Show is on, the most talented nighttime personality on any radio station in America.
The other AMT3000 is being moved from one rare blank spot to another, as I am trying to use the few blank spots for more things then I have spots to set them in. Or on.
Earlier the blond neighbor invited me over for drinks, and I told her I was busy with my AMT3000s and asked her if she had ever considered getting one. The conversation quickly turned to weather.
Getting that AMT3000 will be the best thing you ever did and twenty years from now, if this website survives the intrigues and saboteurs, you will file a nostalgic post about how life reached its high point when you got that transmitter. Carry a picture of it in your wallet and admire it during classes at school.
...I'm out of money. Why oh WHY do these kinds of deals pop up when I'm out of money? Won't have money till the 21st. Ugh! Guess the radio gods want me to wait just a little bit longer.
Another random comment. I'm watching Jay Leno's headlines on WLWT channel 5 and I'm laughing so hard! He cracks me up. I wanna do something like this on Channel X. Still don't know how well it would work on radio (especially with funny pictures). I might have to start a USTREAM channel or something.
I also tried to pick up 830 AM. Too much HD hash from 840 WHAS in Louisville. I hate IBOC so bad!!! It ruins AM DXing! And my Cricket internet has been throttled to the point where the only stations I can stream are less than 32k. By the way, KDX is awesome. I enjoyed listening to Free Talk Live last night. I never knew Detroit was so broke.
I saw a SSTRAN AMT3000 on eBay, but the $20 was only a 5th bid price. There was another one, though, which sold at the final bid @ $114. Still a good price if it was properly built. I'd bet the one still up ends up significantly higher than $20. The bidding ends Jun 17, 201218:15:37 PDT.
Kits are different ... Technically, under Part 15, you can't sell pre-built certified kits for profit. If you don't feel capable of assembling the kit, you can very likely obtain help from local hams. There are no rules which say you can't get help assembling kits; it happens every day in classrooms around the world.
