I do DX listening and every one in a while

I will actually take a portable receiver and

place it out in the back yard under a bucket.

I (Italics are stuck on again, sorry - this

computer keyboard willis messed up and I

don't have time to try and fix this -maybe

it won't come through on the final copy

that is submitted to the thread)

- - -So I  will leave the receiver on one channel

and either attach some kind of recorder to it

for playback later or I will transmit the signal

back into the house with a Part 15 FM transmitter.

This way the receiver is away from all RFI noise in

the house.  but I recently tried to use a solid state

recorder and it sends RFI from it's microprocessor

which gets into the receiver and then is recorded

by the recorder.  I put the recorder a few feet a

It way

from the receiver on the end of a long cable.  This

helps a great deal but there is still some noise.

Can I use chokes, caps, whatever, to get rid of the

remaining noise?

It seems like there must be some way to do this.

That way - I could listen to an entire night of DX

the whole next day.  (If I wanted to.  Do I have the

time, well, not really.)

?Anyway, what to you guys think?

Does it happen when on battery power?

A really crappy switching power supply will cause this more than a display will.

Mark I'll try your approach.

Those are good ideas.

And Darsen the Third everything

is running on batteries.

I could be wrong but I do think a bit

of the interference is coming down the

audio cable. When I start to plug the cable

coming from the recorder into the radio audio

out, as soon as the center tip of the audio plug

hits the inside for the jack, there is suddenly

more interference.

Maybe I've got some chokes sitting around here

somewhere that I can put in the line.

Very best wishes to you guys.

Brooce

Cousin Broocie,

What kind of solid-state recorder are you using, and what socket are you plugged into?

Some models -- like some consumer camcorders and many laptops -- run +5VDC from the socket in order to power an external electret microphone, such as a gaming mic. That causes all kinds of havoc when incompatible gear is hung on it.

Only way to know for sure is to jam a plug in there that's not connected to anything, then measure for DCV between each contact.

Thought that you were recording from the radio not direct but through the air using the mic on the recorder.

If interference happens with direct cable connection this is different....try a ferrite clamp on the audio line and wrap the cable around once. this may work..or...may not. Also keep the recorder to the side of the radio.

I am experimenting with recording

arrangements based on your suggestions.

I will let you know what happens.

Thanks again
