Radio is founded on the management of time whether programming a schedule or maintaining our dial frequency.

So how is it that one of the hosts of "Philosophy Talk", as heard on KDX Worldround Radio, referred to a theory claiming that time is an illusion?

Just then my caffeine level went overboard and I realized that time is generated by the motion inherrent in the universe.

If everything stood still time would not advance and we would not age. But we would be standing still. Our breathing would be suspended, our heart would stop and blood circulation would cease.

The motion of one's operating body system only generates his own personal time, not the time pushing the planet as it rotates and orbits and the solar system as it drifts ceaslessly away from the Big Bang.

Not only are we personalized mobile bionic time machines but the universe as a whole is a time machine. For us to have days and weeks both of the machines have got to be operational.

I'd tend to agree that the past is an illusion and the future even moreso, but the present certainly must exist if only for a nano-second or we wouldn't be able to write about it on this forum.

All these motions we're talking about move exclusively in a forward direction only; this is called the "arrow of time" and explains why we can't return to the past.

Is it all an illusion? Yes, but only when you think about it.

I have long argued that time is related to how one perceives it.  The problem is, we can only perceive the present in real time.  You could also say we can only perceive the presence of time.

We further try to hypothesize that multiple threads in time are possible.  I would argue not.  Past time is what has occured before our present time.  If we were to alter past time events, the present time would not exist, further the past would not be changed because it is past.  A new present time would exist, but it would be the only present time.

It is not unlike pondering the future with different scenarios playing out based on events you control (I will do this in the next paragraph).

I have also argued that time travel (an incorrect description that would be better served by time perception) will only be conquered by augmenting our mental prowess.  That is something that I do not see happening in the near future (I just looked forward in time to make a projected outcome).

Time travel is currently prohibited because of a failure to police ourselves.  I have witnessed too many incidents by those that wish to travel either forward or backwards for self gain or the demise of someone else.  A decision was made by the time perception board prohibiting tampering with time related events.  I founded that board several years ago.

You started it Carl... 🙂

I should do a radio show about this.  But, I generally need to clear the mind with more than a couple of shots of Vodka.  I prefer mine with cranberry juice... I perceive it as healthy.

Does anyone know what we are talking about...I forgot.

craigf admits:  "I forgot what we're talking about."

This contributes to breaks in the continuum. There becomes no memory evidence of ever having talked about anything.

One of us might say, "We should talk sometime."

The other would reply, "But we have talked."

Distrust arises and self confidence lags.

None of this would happen if it weren't for time outs.

The world is littered with literature on the subject, no one takes the time to read it.

Alcohol skews time in such a way as to cause double vision. We begin seeing the world at two different times.

One night after a drinking party I drove home on four highways. It was a miracle I always stayed on the right highway and didn't get lost on the others.

"Time is just an illusion" or "Time exists only because we perceive it"  are phrases used by those who don't understand time, which is everybody by the way.  I have read much from scientists and philosophers who claim to understand time but I have never found an interpretation which is satisfactory.

I just finished a book  titled "Now, The Physics of Time" by Richard A. Muller where he spends almost the entire 338 pages rehashing what others have postulated about time and only a few pages on his theory of time which I found disappointing.  The situation is that most discuss the effects of time but fail at defining the essence of what is time actually.  I certainlly don't know the answer but at least I admit this.

A few of my favorite statements are that before the big bang time has no meaning but that doesn't prove time didn't exist then.  Another is that the smallest meaningful increment of time is the Plank time which doesn't establish that a time increment smaller doesn't exist.  Lastly is the theory that the arrow of time is set by the second law of thermodynamics which seems to exclude that the second law of thermodynamics results from the arrow of time.  So my question is what is fundamental, time itself or the effects we attribute to it?  I wouid like to believe that time is fundamental even though I don't understand it.

Thank you for your time spent reading this.

Neil

I thought I had read something a while ago about how in quantum physics, there's nothing preventing time travel because particles act non deterministically, i.e., according to probability theory.

Reading these posts inspired me to attempt to find that information, and I ran across this.  I don't claim to understand it completely.

Time is something we created and only in our minds.

Time has no beginning or end....where have I heard that before.

We all seem to agree that Einstein existed.

Maybe one of us is wrong.

Forget Time Travel. It is forbidden. The Temporal Guardians put those guidelines in place long ago...

Time is a result of our 3rd Dimension "falling" in a Fourth Dimensional direction. toward Entropy. That is, Order > Chaos. You can visualize it, somewhat, by staring at a Tesseract:

The process does not end. Our "existence" is eternally in motion. It cannot be reversed. It cannot be stopped. Gravity is a RESULT of this "falling". Greater density is only part of it. Time is majorly involved. Space is curved in the Fourth Dimension, and everything follows that curve (in other words "falls", riding on it) toward Entropy.

I guess...

Doug

Einstien insisted that time was an illusion. I was listening to a Big Picture Science episode recently in which the expert guest explained that it takes a few nano seconds for the brain to proccess what it sees and experiences, therefore, by the time you observe and event it is in reality actually in the past.. much in the same respect as when you look at a star in the sky, you are really looking at what it looked like in the long ago in the past and in reality that star you see might not even exist anymore..

Most every acient religion and belief system essential say there is no beginning or end, there is only what is, and all is known, and all is now, but it is incomprehensiable to the physical world and that the truth is found within light.

I'm flabbergasted it all.

On a side note, they say all waves have the same charicturistics of behavior, be it radio waves,  light waves, sound waves, or even ocean waves.. Maybe this all has something to do with the expression "Go with the flow".

Carl, you're giving me a headache

Rich Powers complains:  "Carl, you're giving me a headache."

Carl seeks a caring solution:  Would you prefer the ache somewhere else?

While reading the link about sending light particles to the past I thought of a "lost in time" phenomonen that happens to many of us everyday and we think nothing of it.

It's called latency. It happens when we stream on the web.

We send the news at exactly 11 o'clock, but our listener doesn't receive it until 1-minute-past-11. Where is our news in the meantime?

Really makes you wonder.
