THIS town actually drops turkeys out of airplanes.  They've done it for decades, although not "officially" anymore.   We just did a story a week or so ago that they dropped turkeys at this years festival, although unofficially.  Note that this was a big news item back in the 70's, right about the time they were writing WKRP.  I would think an actual, decades long festival where they drop them from airplanes, that was in the news at the time due to animal rights protests might be a more likely inspiration...  Anyway, here's a link about it...
